Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Investigates conditions and initiates procedures to abate violations related to the health, safety, and welfare of the community. Conducts field inspections of parcels of land, structures, etc. to ensure compliance with applicable City ordinances and state laws, and zoning compliance. Photographs violations; creates files; prepares investigative reports; prepares legal documents, including abatement and inspection warrants and correspondence; collects and safeguards evidence for civil property abatements and civil litigation; maintains current records of field and office

work.                                  •

Prepares necessary citations, violations, warning letters, and other notices which outline proper repair correction methods, time limits, permits, and all necessary remedial work required. Carries negligent cases through prosecution in situations of non-compliance. Responds to questions and concerns from the public, departmental staff, and other agencies; provides information as appropriate and resolves service issues and complaints. Establish and build positive working relationships with jurisdiction departments and local law and enforcement staff. May perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Job Qualifications and Education:

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education or experience is normally equivalent to;

 

Education:

 

Completion of 832 Penal Code required.

 

An AA degree in building inspection and/or police academy desirable.

 

Experience: at least two (2) years’ experience working with the public in the interpretation and application of codes, laws, rules, and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Must have current possession of Code Enforcement Certificate through California Association of Code Enforcement Officers (or equivalent organization) or ability to obtain. Current knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of law enforcement codes and regulations.

 

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships. Working knowledge of office computer software (i.e., Word, Excel, etc.). Communicate via a police radio effectively. Must have a valid California Class C driver's license.

Characteristics:


Works in an office environment and in an outdoor environment which may require moving about safely, walking on uneven surfaces; stooping, crawling, climbing ladders, working in difficult weather conditions (hot & cold); and working around various equipment. The ability to lift, carry, pull, and push tools, supplies, and other equipment.

 

Self-confident, able to multi-task, organized and self-starting. Exercises tact and professionalism.

 

 

Performance Expectations: Performs a variety of field and office tasks to secure compliance
