At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together. We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).
We are seeking a Software Engineer specializing in Data to contribute to the development of the cloud-native data platform for Schwab Asset Management (SAM). We are looking for a code-first engineer, not just a tool operator—who treats data infrastructure as software. This role is ideal for a professional with deep experience in programmatic data engineering who is ready to design scalable architectures with minimal supervision. You will be integral to building robust data services and pipelines on Snowflake and Google Cloud. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where you will write production-grade code to drive the evolution and optimization of our data ecosystem.
What you have
Core Engineering & Architecture:
3-5 years of experience architecting and building cloud-native data platforms (GCP preferred) with a focus on writing clean, maintainable infrastructure-as-code.Strong proficiency in Python (or Java/Scala) with a track record of building production-grade data applications, not just scripts.Data Systems:
Deep experience modeling and optimizing data for cloud warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery) using modern design patterns (Star Schema, Data Vault).Hands-on expertise with distributed processing frameworks (Apache Spark, Beam, or Flink) and orchestration tools (Airflow/Composer).DevOps & CI/CD:
Solid understanding of the full software development lifecycle, utilizing CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Bamboo, Jenkins) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).Database Versatility:
Working knowledge of both RDBMS and NoSQL technologies (MongoDB, BigTable, DynamoDB) and when to apply them.Professional Traits:
Strong technical communication skills with an ability to translate complex data problems into scalable software solutions.Self-starter mentality with the ability to prioritize tasks and deliver results with minimal supervision.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in software development.Experience: 3+ years of experience engineering cloud-native data platforms, with a focus on backend development and data architecture (vs. just analytics).Infrastructure as Code: Proven ability to manage infrastructure programmatically.
Preferred Qualifications & Attributes:
Financial Domain: Prior experience in financial services, specifically with asset management concepts like NAV, Total Returns, or Fair Value calculations.Data Governance: Experience implementing automated data quality checks, technical governance, and lineage within pipelines (treating data quality as code).Engineering Mindset: A strong critical thinker who approaches data issues with a software engineering lens—root cause analysis, unit testing, and scalable design patterns.Communication: Ability to abstract complex technical details when speaking with business stakeholders, while documenting architectural decisions clearly for the engineering team.Autonomy: A true self-starter who identifies gaps in the platform and takes the initiative to fix them without waiting for a ticket.
In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities
