The RoleThe Group Leader for the Climatic Wind Tunnel (CWT) is responsible for ensuring safe, high-quality, and efficient operation of the facility. In this role, you will lead a team of salaried technicians who prepare and set up vehicles with instrumentation and fixturing, execute testing, and interface with test control systems. You will oversee daily operational performance, ensure the test schedule is fully utilized, and provide a best-in-class testing experience for internal stakeholders.
Success in this role requires strong leadership, technical depth in lab and tunnel operations, critical thinking, and a commitment to GM behaviors. You will play a key role in developing your team through clear goal-setting, performance assessments, and continuous coaching. Flexibility in work hours is required, including potential weekends and holidays, depending on business needs.
This position also includes administrative responsibilities as needed to support the operation.
What You’ll DoLead a team of technicians at varying experience levels to meet test objectives and operational performance targets
Coach, develop, and evaluate technicians to grow both technical and leadership capability
Collaborate cross-functionally to align resources and support CWT stakeholders
Plan, schedule, and execute facility tasks and maintenance activities across multiple teams
Monitor, manage, and reduce operating costs
Track and maintain internal quality metrics
Ensure compliance with GM standards and federal regulations
Support technicians through troubleshooting and solution execution
Demonstrate managerial courage, driving accountability and positive change
Develop, maintain, and report departmental performance metrics
Maintain high standards of safety, housekeeping, and Lean process application
Create an environment that enables all team members to perform at their full potential
Lead initiatives to grow Lab quality, capability, and technical skillsets
Foster an inclusive, collaborative environment with strong team relationships
Work flexible hours and provide remote support during off-shift needs
Support continuous improvement initiatives for ongoing Lab development
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)Minimum 5+ years of experience in developmental or validation testing, or relevant technical experience
5+ years of dynamometer experience
2+ years of wind tunnel testing or related experience
2+ years of people leadership or team leadership experience
Associate’s degree in a technical discipline
Demonstrated leadership experience driving operational performance and team development
Strong understanding of GMS principles
Proficiency with GM systems such as Ariba, Purchasing, Workday, and Concur
Experience with data acquisition systems (Talent, Vehicle Spy, Intrepid)
Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and make independent decisions
Experience using and modifying Tridium systems
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for complex issues
