Civil Engineering Intern - Rail & Transit - Summer 2026
Jacobs is seeking a Civil Engineer Intern (Rail) to join our Transportation team in Chicago, IL working on projects that bring innovative solutions to our clients’ challenges locally and worldwide. This is an exciting opportunity for you to join our team and be involved in a variety of engineering tasks for our Rail and Transit clients; including planning, design, and execution of rail infrastructure projects. In this position you will work with a multidisciplinary team taking on a variety of tasks that blend your theoretical knowledge with practical application. Under the guidance of professional engineers, architects and other senior technical staff you will work on Rail Stations and transportation structure construction projects. Projects range from extending and renovating existing facilities to developing new alignments, depots, and stations. The rail engineering intern will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of railway design and development. They will assist in conducting feasibility studies and alignment design for railways, as well as contribute to the design and refurbishment of stations, depots, and related facilities. The intern will be exposed to project management practices, safety assessments, and operations planning within the rail sector. They will participate in track design and electrification projects, using specialized rail engineering software and CAD tools for design tasks. The intern will also assist in conducting site surveys and inspections of existing rail infrastructure, helping to assess current conditions and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, they will support the preparation of cost estimates and material quantity takeoffs for rail projects, gaining valuable insight into the financial aspects of engineering projects. Throughout the internship, they will have the opportunity to support senior engineers in client communications and project management tasks, developing essential professional skills in the rail engineering field. This position demands a results-driven, client-focused professional with excellent written and verbal communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a strong work ethic. You’ll take ownership of the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of the work assigned to you by demonstrating the ability to progress from basic design work assignments to more complicated and involved projects working in conjunction with a technical team.
