Job Description

AECOM is excited to offer a Civil Engineering Intern position at our Burnaby, BC office for the Summer 2026 term.

Starting in May 2026, this internship provides an excellent opportunity for aspiring civil engineers to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and innovative environment. As part of our team, you will contribute to real-world projects in the municipal stormwater, water, and wastewater sector while developing your technical and professional skills under the guidance of experienced mentors.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Assist in the design of civil systems associated with municipal water, wastewater, and drainage conveyance facilities.Prepare engineering drawings and designs using AutoCAD and other relevant software.Participate in site visits and field work to collect data and observe construction processes.Contribute to the development of technical memorandums, reports, and project documentation.Perform basic engineering calculations and analysis under supervision.Assist in the preparation of project specifications, contract documents, and permit applications.Support the development of construction cost estimates and project schedules.Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions.Help conduct research on new technologies and methodologies in civil engineering.Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.

Qualifications

While this is a co-op position, the ideal successful candidate will have a general understanding of civil design, construction, and some experience in civil engineering. They will be expected to work successfully within a team environment and be able to communicate effectively with other project team members and clients. They will have a high level of initiative, motivation, and display drive, energy, and enthusiasm for getting things done! The successful candidate will be expected to support the delivery of linear conveyance infrastructure to customers mostly within the municipal stormwater, water, and wastewater sector.

Minimum Requirements:

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Process Engineering, or a related field, with at least 2 years of study completed.Candidates who have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and plan to pursue a Master’s Degree are also eligible.

Preferred Qualifications:

Basic understanding of civil engineering principles and practices, particularly in municipal water/wastewater infrastructure.Previous experience in civil engineering, construction, hydraulic modelling, planning, and/r=or design construction.Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D. Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors, and clients. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Enthusiasm for learning and adapting to new technologies and methodologies.Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.Willingness to participate in field work and site visits.Familiarity with sustainable design principles and green infrastructure (e.g., ponds, wetlands, bioswales).
