PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In a state childcare facility or program this class is accountable for the administration of an assigned unit(s) of residential living or program activity including the training, assignment and evaluation of staff and supervision of specialized services for treatment and care of residents. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES + Supervises and advises staff in care, custody and treatment of patients in unit; + Provides for adequate round-the-clock coverage of unit and takes necessary action in case of absences; + Evaluates work and reviews staff performance; + Works with caseworkers and/or social workers and other professional staff in making decisions through evaluation of patients’ progress and adjustment; + Conducts meetings with unit staff in order to discuss behavioral problems and progress of residents in unit; + Reviews and signs reports of significant happenings in unit; + Oversees distribution and use of supplies from warehouse and storage areas; + Reviews supply inventories to ensure they are in conformance with institution policies; + Initiates contraband searches to ensure patients’ safety and conformance with policy; + May perform emergency medical procedures; + May conduct group counseling sessions, lead group interaction meetings with residents of unit and write progress reports on patients; + Performs related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY + Considerable knowledge of + physiological and perceptual disorders; + various behavior modification systems; + Knowledge of + purpose and structure of institution including its major sections, goals of treatment programs and relationship to procedures; + security and fire safety procedures; + disciplinary techniques and guidelines for use; + laws relating to children's rights including abuse and neglect; + first aid including medications and possible reactions; + Considerable interpersonal skills; + Ability to + identify problems in group living situations arising from character disorders; + mediate problems between staff members and clients; + set priorities, organize activities and coordinate programs; + evaluate information and determine appropriate course of action; + evaluate client progress in therapy program; + supervise. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Two (2) years of experience as a Lead Children Services Worker or Children Services Specialist. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED Three (3) years of experience at a supervisory/lead level in the treatment and care of residents in an institution or facility for emotionally disturbed or delinquent children may be substituted for the General Experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS + Experience working with adolescents with psychiatric disorders in a congregate care setting SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS + Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language. + Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
