Job Overview: 

Plans, directs and supervises all clinical and administrative aspects of the Perfusion Department with regard to services provided, programs and evaluations. 

 
Responsible for maintaining Perfusion Services in accordance with standards established by the Chief of Cardiac Surgery and such federal, state and local standards that may apply.  

This also includes the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations standards. The list of essential and other functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.

Qualifications: 

Required: 

Educational: 
Graduate of a certified perfusion training program. 
Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. 
Licensed in the state of New Jersey by the Perfusion Advisory Committee. 
Experience/Qualifications/Special Skills: 
Minimum five (5) years clinical experience 
Two (2) years supervisory experience 
 

Essential Functions: 

Clinical Functions: 
• Heart-lung machine (pump console or equivalent) for open heart surgery. 
• Assures that all components of CPB circuit are in place and functional. To include the heart-lung machine, oxygenator, tubing, reservoirs, prime solutions, safety devices and accessories. 
• Assesses the CPB circuit. 
• Assesses the functional status of the pump console monitoring system, safety features and accessories. 
• Conducts CPB in a professional manner so as to insure the optimal in patient physiological status and as much as possible the “ideal” in perfusion care. 
• Monitors patient parameters during CPB. Administers medication under the supervision of the surgeon and anesthesiologist. Controls patient temperature, blood pressure, blood gases, activated clotting time (ACT) and collects and records pertinent data. 
• Mixes medications in a sterile manner. 
• Insure that inventory of supplies is maintained. 
• Performs routine maintenance. 
• Autotransfusion Prolonged Extracorporeal Support: 
• IABP, CentriMag, Abiomed, HeartMate, HeartWare, ECMO or any other assist device. 
• Assure adequate inventory of supplies. Prolonged extracorporeal support to include: 
• Monitoring ACT, administration of anticoagulants PRN. 
• Monitoring laboratory parameters, circulatory status and assisting nursing personnel, resident physician and attending physician in implementation and maintenance of prolonged support. 
• Assure appropriate supplies for anticipated pump head, oxygenator and/or circuit change-out PRN. 

Administrative: 
• Arranges staff scheduling. 
• Prepares appropriate statistics and reports. 
• Performs and prepares evaluations of equipment and supplies. 
• Evaluates staff and residents. 
• Assists on capital and operating budget preparations. 
• Schedules staff meetings. 
• Functions as a liaison with the Chief of Cardiac Surgery and the Chief of Cardiac Anesthesia for new technologies and techniques. 
• Coordinates performance improvement activities. 
• Responsible for the inventory management of perfusion supplies. 
• Supervises perfusion training and clinical education. 
• Responsible for promoting research activities among the perfusion staff. 
• Promotes strong interpersonal relationships. 
• Promotes educational growth and opportunities for the perfusion staff.
