Chief of Perfusion Services - Pediatric - MSH - Full Time
**Job Description** With general oversight from the Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery and the Administrative Director for Cardiovascular Surgery, the Chief of Perfusion Services is responsible for the development and operation of Perfusion Services to include administration, technical and organizational aspects in accordance with applicable Federal, State, Cardiovascular Surgery and general hospital rules/regulations, policies and procedures. These include, but are not limited to accreditation, teaching, orientation and staffing, and the overall day-to-day operations of the Service. Provides staff with resources necessary to perform their roles safely and competently. Effectively leads the team while promoting efficiency in utilization of both personnel and non-personnel resources. Works with the Chief, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Perfusion staff to ensure a quality-based, customer-oriented flow of work. Operates extracorporeal circulation equipment and prepares and administers blood products and prescription solutions through bypass circuitry. The individual must possess a thorough knowledge of current Joint Commission and HIPAA standards. Requires discretion and judgment to organize priorities, assure adequate resources, support patient needs, promote professional and personal development and handle confidential information. Responsible To: Clinical responsibility and oversight falls under the Chief and Chairman of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department and/or his qualified designee. Administrative responsibility falls under the Senior Vice President of Perioperative Services. **Qualifications** 5+ years experience as a Perfusionist and 3-5 years of management experience required **Responsibilities** 1.Provides leadership and management to the Perfusion Unit, broadly overseeing program development, performance objectives and metrics, operations management, quality and service standards, technical competency and vendor and equipment management. Determines appropriate staffing to achieve goals and objectives. Communicates and ensures that staff are informed of and adhere to the direction, vision and goals of the unit. 2.Establishes the strategic vision for perfusion services and plans for the growth of the unit in collaboration with the Chief and Administrative Director of the Division ofCardiovascularSurgery; ensures overall department organization and program design and development coordinate with the strategy and vision ofCardiovascularSurgery and the Operating Rooms. Works closely with the Chief and Administrative Director in short- and long-term strategic planning, equipment needs and quality assurance. 3.Ensures continuous operational improvement, partnering with perfusionists, surgeons, administrators and others to identify areas for service and performance improvement; evaluate and implement options; establish metrics and engage in monitoring of service and performance to ensure success is attained. 4.Works with the designated Quality officer in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery to monitor clinical outcomes to identify areas of risk. Creates and oversees risk management assessment and related improvement initiatives. Serves as champion and advocate for effective and efficient service delivery and patient care. Determines department standards to delineate the unit’s levels of quality service and care. Models and implements initiatives to recognize high quality job performance. 5.Monitors industry standards, regulations and clinical requirements to ensure the program meets hospital mandates as well as JC accreditation. Oversees and/or conducts audits and ameliorates deficiencies. 6.Identifies, reviews and implements new innovations pertaining to the field of perfusion; introduces new technology; establishes and executes plans to sunset equipment, technology and other supports. 7.Establishes and manages vendor relations to include the sourcing, selection and negotiation of equipment and service contracts. Maintains effective working relationships with vendors to ensure ongoing support. Monitors all contracts, renegotiating or preparing requests for proposals. 8.Works closely with the Senior VP of Perioperative Services and the Administrative Director in overall financial management and preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets. Plans the fiscal management of the unit for program financial health as well as human resource and equipment components. Participates and/or leads in the following: oAnnual planning for equipment acquisitions, working closely with OR administration on capital and non-capital equipment management. oPersonnel utilization and compensation. oOrdering of products for cardiac perfusion and other requests. oWorks with Materials Management personnel to ensure product and equipment costs and inventory levels meet requirements. 9.Broadly manages the day-to-day responsibilities of the perfusion team in collaboration with and through the Lead Perfusionist. In this cooperative venture, the Director partners with the Lead Perfusionist to: oDevelop and oversee orientation programs for new staff members. Manage ongoing staff competencies including design, assessment and documentation. oStandardize practice including the creation, management, implementation and monitoring of perfusion protocols. oCreate staff work schedules to include 7-day week coverage in the OR as well as cases outside of Cardiac Surgery as called upon and on-call coverage. oAuthorize time off, overtime, leaves of absence and approve the weekly payroll. oProvide direct supervision of technical staff: is physically present and accessible in the immediate patient care area to intervene, assist or counsel as needed. oEnsure perfusionist staff meet certification, licensure, and continuing education credits. Evaluate and approve attendance at training events; authorize off site travel for related events. oCreate and maintain training programs for students and other health care disciplines. 10.Leads human resource management and recruitment in collaboration with the Administrative Director, Human Resources and Recruitment personnel. Designs and delivers appropriate staffing models to meet the scheduled and additional demands for perfusion services. Manages appropriate workload measurement information to support staffing decisions. Creates an environment that encourages staff professional growth and development. Job Description 11.Conducts performance management of all staff members on an ongoing and annual basis; effectively resolves employee relations matters. Advocates for team, including competitive compensation programs. 12.Initiates, organizes and oversees research projects; develops research models and methodologies; ensures integrity of data, process and analysis. Encourages and incorporates staff participation in research endeavors. Presents research findings during staff, division and departmental meetings as well as at local, regional and national conferences. Publishes as first author 13.Develops, maintains, communicates and enforces administrative and clinical policies and procedures. Oversees documentation for all patient related activities. Works with the hospital legal advisors and risk management to evaluate record keeping and reduce risk. 14.Provides management oversight to associated programs, including the Intraoperative Autologous Transfusion program and point-of-care testing including training, management and quality control. 15.Ensures effective exchange of information, operational and clinical, to support the needs of the service and team. Maintains strong communication channels among perfusionists and other medical care providers. 16.Ensures the overall maintenance of the unit including safety, infrastructure and environmental issues, ensuring compliance with institutional, OSHA, HIPAA, JCAHO etc. guidelines. Establishes and maintains equipment safety and calibration standards for new and existing equipment. **Clinical Services** 1.Actively works with the medical industry to promulgate the development of evolving technologies and interacts with other institutions utilizing evolving technology to adapt those technologies for the hospital. 2.Evaluates the addition of clinical services and programs, e.g. ECMO, to the perfusionist scope of practice while collaborating with others within the institution. 3.Partners with Department of Surgery divisions and hospital departments to develop and execute clinical programs in which perfusion services apply, including donor organ recovery. Manages support to these programs by overseeing perfusion operational requirements and staff. 4.Consults with Vascular and Neurological Services to improve technologies regarding Perfusion Service. 5.Compiles and maintains current procedure protocols, with appropriate test indications and keeps them available for review and/or reference. Establishes and maintains quality control standards for testing, personnel, and other departmental areas. Assure that all quality improvement (QI) data is current and documented. 6.In conjunction with the Chief, Department ofCardiovascular Surgery, develops, manages and promotes training for residents, fellows, and visiting physicians. Job Description ensures staff members perform only those perfusionist duties that each staff person is prepared and qualified to perform. 7.Performs perfusion services in the Operating Room as a member of the clinical team for Cardiovascular, Vascular and Transplant Services. This includes assembling, verifying, calibrating and operating equipment, administering and monitoring prescribed solutions, ensuring appropriate patient blood flow and relatedly adjusting equipment settings and recording and maintaining records of all cardiovascular bypass procedures. 8.Participates in operation of cardiac assist devices during cardiac procedures. Participates in ECMO program as needed. The salary range for the role is $186005 - $279007 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need.
