Position Title: Analyst II

Business Title: Chemist II

Location: Mason, Ohio

Reports to: Onsite Supervisor

FLSA: Non-Exempt

 

Hours Worked: Monday through Friday, 1st shift, forty hours per week. However, must be flexible to meet the needs of the department and complete other projects as assigned. Position available for annual renewal upon review at listed end date.

 

Compensation Range: $24 - $27 an hour (e.g., the job posting is not necessarily reflective of actual compensation that may be earned, and actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as locations, education, experience, and skillset).

 

Position Summary:

The Chemist II is responsible for assisting the client with a diverse range of projects supporting the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability lab. Associate will be trained on and independently run client-specific methods for Wastewater experimentation as well as the safe handling of radiological materials. Associate will assist with experimentation, data collection and analysis. Associate will assist with client with optimization and method development for new areas of research. Associate will receive specialized training for working in a RAM lab and will be required to undergo routine retraining to stay active on RAM certificate.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Support Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability R&D research activities

· Assist with performing routine sampling of local wastewater, activated sludge, soil, sediment, and/or other natural water sources.

· Analyze samples from above for contaminates, microbiological (BSL-1) organisms, and dissolved compounds.

· Assist with the set up and monitoring of standard and non-standard environmental fate studies

· Assist with the tagging and experimentation with low-risk radiological isotopes

· Assist with the optimization and/or method-development of new assays to further the research goals of the ESS group

· Assist with the safe handling and disposal of wastewater, biological/microbiological samples, and radio-tagged samples

· Assist the group and on-site RSO with performing routine RAM safety testing and tracking to ensure compliance with RAM certificate

· Attend annual and initial training for RAM work, including passing online and in-person evaluations.

· Communicates with group regarding sample processing, data collection, and reporting issues/concerns from both technical and experimental.

· Lab upkeep, restocking supplies, safe disposal of wastes, cleaning, organizing, chemical inventory management

· Timely and accurate documentation of experimental notes, data, and results into various note booking systems (physical notebooks, logbooks, Sharepoint files, and Excel) including QAing all notebook entries

· Support other ESS research as needed, such as various lab methods/experiments.

· Follow the guidelines set forth with clients and in the company Quality, Health, Safety, Security and Environmental policies and procedures.

· Comply with clients and company management systems in accordance with appropriate regulatory agencies.

· Follows the guidelines set forth by clients and the company Quality Manual and Safety / Chemical Hygiene Plan.

· Other duties as defined by Manager, department needs and workload.

 

Skills & Proficiencies:

· Strong understanding of scientific principles/concepts, general laboratory skills needed, pipetting, making solutions, aseptic technique, documentation, understanding protocols/procedures, etc.

· Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to learn quickly

· Must have good customer service skills- job is client facing and performed in client laboratory

· Must have advanced skills in basic programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and keeping a laboratory notebook

· Must be able to work independently and work as part of a team

· Must effectively manage the day-to-day operations of laboratory

· Computational skills, able to understand and/or learn basic mathematical equations/calculations needed to work in the lab and analyze data

· Strong adherence and vigilance in regard to job safety standards

Education and Experience:

· Degree requirement: Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology or closely related field

· Previous industry experience preferred

· Previous experience working in BSL-1/2 lab

· Previous experience or training in handling RAM or working in a RAM lab

· Previous experience working with or around wastewater preferred

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted in lieu of above.
