SUMMARYThe Certified Lactation Consultant reports to the Perinatal Education Supervisor Provides information and education regarding breastfeeding to patients and families Assists patients with the establishment of lactationIdentifies and aids in resolution of breastfeeding difficulties develops care plans with staff to meet patientrsquos individual needs providing follow up through phone calls or private consultations Provides information and education regarding breastfeeding to maternity and NICU staff Assists in the development of policies and protocolsCOMPETENCIESmiddot Possesses basic computer skillsESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIESJob Specific Competency Assists in the establishment of lactation through education and direct patient care in the antepartum intrapartumand postpartum periods Assesses for breastfeeding difficulties Works with providers to establish an individual plan of action for patientsusing hospital policies and protocols to ensure consistency of information Provides emotional support for patients with breastfeeding difficulties Practices active listening skills to fullyassess a patientrsquos needs Provides reassurance acceptance and encouragement Provides information in an unbiased manner and encourages parents to make informed choices based on their ownneeds and preferences Demonstrates acceptance of patientsrsquo feelings rights and choices as evidenced by patientfeedback Works collaboratively with maternity and NICU staff to develop breastfeeding policies and protocols for allbreastfeeding dyads Shares educational resources with maternity and NICU staff through in services and one to one communication Provides written documentation of care and treatment recommendations Provides follow up for at risk patients after leaving hospital Plans class material to meet participantsrsquo level of understanding Ensures that requested topics are covered inclass Relates to clients in a supportive affirmative and open manner Is sensitive and responsive to culturaldifferences Displays approachability as evidenced by participantsrsquo comments on class evaluations Represents GMR as a breastfeeding resource to the
