Capacity Planner

Job Summary

The Capacity Planner is responsible for ensuring the efficient and cost-effective movement of freight by aligning shipment needs with carrier capabilities. This role involves sourcing and managing a reliable network of third-party carriers, negotiating competitive rates, and optimizing load assignments. The Capacity Planner uses data analysis and market insights to forecast capacity needs, anticipate seasonal demand, and maintain accurate records in the Transportation Management System (TMS). Collaboration with internal teams and continuous monitoring of carrier performance are key to supporting operational goals and customer satisfaction.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Ensure shipments are matched with the right carriers and delivered efficientlyIdentify and vet prospective carriers to build a reliable network of service providersNegotiate shipping rates and terms with carriers to ensure cost-effective and timely transportationMatch available loads with third party carriers, optimizing routes and schedules to maximize efficiencyAnalyze historical shipment data and market trends to forecast future capacity needsAnticipate seasonal fluctuations and proactively secure carrier capacityIdentify gaps in the carrier network and recommend strategic partnershipsTrack carrier performance metrics to support data-driven decisionsMaintain accurate and up-to-date carrier profiles, rate tables, and capacity data in TMSWork closely with transportation operations and customer service to align capacity with demandStay informed on market conditionsResponsible for maintaining SOPs for assigned plants


Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent3–5 years of experience in transportation planning, carrier procurement, or logistics operationsUnderstanding of freight markets, carrier operations, and transportation modes preferredFamiliarity with transportation management systems (TMS) and ERP platforms preferredFamiliar with freight rate structures, carrier scorecards, and market intelligence toolsKnowledge with Carrier Sourcing and Vetting preferredProficiency in Microsoft Office preferredKnowledge of company policies and procedures preferred
