Cancer Program Specialist
POSITION SUMMARY: Provides technical expertise and assistance to the Cancer Committee in the interpretation and implementation of the American College of Surgeon’s (ACOS) Commission on Cancer (COC) accreditation standards. Manages the Cancer Registry activities within the Cancer Services Department to ensure compliance with the American College of Surgeon (ACOS) Commission on Cancer (COC) and State of Connecticut Cancer Registry requirements. Responsible for organizing the Cancer Committee, Cancer Conferences and Cancer Registry operations. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: + Current active Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification awarded by the National Cancer Registrars’ Association (NCRA). + Bachelor’s degree in nursing, Healthcare administration, Business, or a related field OR + Degree in Cancer Registry Management or completed 60 hours of College Level Courses, including 6 college credit hours in Human Anatomy and Human Physiology. EXPERIENCE: + 5 Years operational experience overseeing comprehensive cancer program and registry. COMPETENCIES: + The level of knowledge/skills must be continually updated to remain proficient and accurate in the collection of data specific to the Cancer Registry, as well as the CoC Cancer Program Accreditation Standards. + Strong personal computer skills with Microsoft Office Word and Outlook and experience with cancer registry software is also highly desirable. + Must be able to read, speak and write proficiently in English to effectively communicate daily with hospital staff, patients and visitors. Eastern Connecticut Health Network reserves the right to change or assign other duties and responsibilities to this position + Must have knowledge and exhibit compliance to standards of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. + The Cancer disease process and standard diagnostic tests for detecting and treating such (human anatomy, medical terminology). + The content and use of patient medical records, patient histories and treatment modalities + The International Classification of Disease for Oncology (ICD-O) coding system, medical and surgical terminology, personal computers, and automatic data processing techniques. + Must keep abreast of changes in reference materials and current literature relative to the cancer registry and the CoC Accreditation standards. + Attends continuing education programs, maintaining up-to-date reference manuals and demonstrating a working knowledge of new and revised procedures for compliance with accrediting agencies and the state cancer registry. + Responsible for providing strategic direction to the Comprehensive Cancer Committee, in collaboration with the Cancer Committee Chairperson(s), to assure continued accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (AcoS CoC). + Leads accreditation process and formulates action plans to address deficiencies in partnership with department and physician leaders. + Responsible for serving as content expert for cancer accreditation and cancer registry. + Provides department and operational leadership with best practice recommendations, + Responsible for achieving continued accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (AcoS CoC.) + Responsible for overseeing cancer registry operations, including national data submissions, data quality assurance reviews, interpretation of regulatory standards and overall program management. + Partners with physician leaders to leverage cancer registry data to support monitoring and improvement of cancer care and research into cancer treatment and care delivery. + Research’s upcoming changes related to quality, regulatory or accreditation requirements that relate to the cancer program and develop strategies to proactively meet new requirements. + Oversees compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory cancer data reporting and its impact to the cancer program. + Leads departmental quality improvement projects in cancer registry and accreditation performance. + Trains staff as necessary to create depth to continued uninterrupted registry services. + Attends Cancer Committee meetings and ensures cancer committee composition, meeting schedule, agenda and minutes meet the CoC Standards. + Maintain documentation of all Cancer Committee activities using minutes and program activity in preparation for survey. + Serves as the Cancer Conference Coordinator for the Cancer Committee. + Assists in the coordination and documentation of all Cancer Conferences. + Assists in maintaining quality assurance pertinent to the cancer program and cancer registry. + Performs quality control audits as necessary to meet requirements of the State of Connecticut and AcoS guidelines. + Prepares and distributes statistical reports on the program’s cancer patient population when requested. + Supervises daily operations of the Cancer Registry. + Develops and implements policies and procedures pertinent to the Cancer Registry. + Identifies all appropriate cancer cases diagnosed and/or treated at ECHN. + Assists and oversees the accurate abstraction for all required data items in accordance with the State of Connecticut and the AcoS CoC abstracting and staging guidelines, ICD-O coding rules, Seer Summary Staging and AJCC staging guidelines. + Maintains current and accurate follow up as required by the AcoS. + Ensures accuracy and ability to maintain security of registry data and patient confidentiality. + Ongoing analysis of system and proposes appropriate changes in mechanism of case finding, data entry and report generation as needed. + Responsible for maintaining knowledge of current trends and practice by attending national conferences, continuing education programs and review of current literature. + Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
