Business Unit/Role Specific Info 

The American Express business has two core types of customers. The Card Members that use our cards to make purchases, and the businesses that accept them. In Global Merchant & Network Services, we primarily focus on the businesses that accept our cards. We bring together the businesses that manage and evolve the company’s relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express, as well as the team that runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally. This is an exciting time for GMNS. We are growing global acceptance of our cards, driving greater usage of our network, using our modern capabilities to capture broader revenue streams, and driving innovation both in-house and with partners. To put the scale of our global reach in numbers:

 More than 80 million global locations accept American Express payment products  We operate in 198 countries and territories  We have 135+ million cards in force, that perform 12 billion transactions per year and contribute more than $1.5 trillion in network volume  We have 190+ partners who either issue cards on our network, and/or sign new businesses to accept Amex on our behalf 

How will you make an impact in this role?

Our Industrial Engineers act as internal business consultants to support our acquisition, servicing, and operations business groups. Our primary goals are to enable superior customer experiences, drive efficiencies while reducing costs, by applying thought leadership and innovation to identify process improvement opportunities. You will be supporting efforts to collect data, analyze insights, develop proposals & recommendations for leadership, and deploy improvements to our systems & processes.  Projects will give exposure to multiple different business groups across the company, coordinating with Technologies, Finance, Risk, Operations, Marketing, Brand, external vendors, and many more.  

This internship experience will offer you the opportunity to be part of an innovative and hard-working team focused on making American Express an indispensable payments partner to our merchants, delivering differentiated products and services and driving revenue growth for both merchants and American Express. 

This position will be based in Phoenix, AZ  

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027 Currently enrolled in a full-time bachelor's degree program in one of the below areas or similar: Industrial, Manufacturing, Systems, or Operations Engineering Informatics  Information Technology/Systems Supply Chain Management Engineering Management Industrial Distribution Business Data Analytics Statistics   

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to communicate orally & in writing clearly and consistently with superiors & peers.   Adept at root cause and quantitative analysis using analytical skills.   Understanding of continuous process improvement & problem-solving methodologies.   Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and in teams.   Results driven with the ability to lead projects & initiatives to completion.   Proven ability to drive project implementation working with diverse customer groups.  Knowledge & exposure using common IE software (such as Excel, SQL, etc.).  Knowledge, exposure, or expertise in multiple IE topics, such as the following:    continuous improvement  sophisticated problem solving  cost benefit analysis  lean Six Sigma  project management statistics  operations research  forecasting  quality control / statistical process control process or value stream mapping, etc.  

Salary Range: $24.05 to $63.00 hourly + sign-on bonus
