PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Buyer will perform and manage the buying function to assure continuous supply of assigned components across diversified commodities—both domestic and international—to maintain required levels of material to support production requirements at optimum cost. This includes managing global supplier relationships, navigating international logistics, and ensuring materials meet or exceed company quality requirements.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Establishes and maintains good supplier relationships, including international vendors across multiple time zones and cultures.
+ Monitors open purchase orders to ensure on-time delivery and working capital targets can be achieved, factoring in international lead times, customs clearance, and freight variability.
+ Monitors supplier delivery, quality, and customer service performance; coordinates development and tracks improvement plans when necessary, including the issuance of supplier scorecards with Commodity Managers.
+ Contacts suppliers for expedites, quality issues, past due shipments, and stock-outs, including navigating language barriers and international communication protocols.
+ Ensures timely order and receipt of material to support production, including coordination with freight forwarders and customs brokers for international shipments.
+ Periodic review of stocking levels and replenishment plans for all inventory items in a structured manner to ensure customer delivery performance expectations and working capital targets are met.
+ Uses MRP (Materials Requirements Planning) to maintain proper inventory levels, including planning for extended international lead times.
+ Ensures proper execution of procedures and all related activities when issuing purchase orders, including obtaining required approvals, resolving discrepancies with suppliers, and managing non-conforming materials—especially in cross-border transactions.
+ Ensures proper execution of procedures related to scrapping material and debit memo process.
+ Manages contracts with suppliers, including negotiation of inventory replenishment methods (e.g., Kanban, consignment, supplier stocking program), with attention to international logistics and warehousing.
+ Tracks and controls inbound freight costs to ensure total cost meets or exceeds expectations; advises management of exceptions, especially those related to international shipping and tariffs.
+ Reviews Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and supplier transitions to ensure proper inventory levels are maintained and risk to excess/obsolete inventory is minimized, including international supplier phase-outs or transitions.
+ Performs other duties as required.
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
+ Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work, especially in managing international documentation and compliance.
+ Demonstrates good organizational skills and good follow-up techniques across global time zones.
+ Must be able to multitask and manage international purchasing complexities.
+ Advanced computer skills, including familiarity with international trade platforms and logistics tracking tools.
+ Commitment to supporting team goals and cross-functional collaboration with global stakeholders.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
+ Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain or related field from four-year College or technical school preferred
+ 3-4 years of Supply Chain experience with exposure to international purchasing preferred
+ APICS (American Production & Inventory Control Society) and/or NAPM (National Association of Purchasing Management) certification is preferred
+ Experience with Plan For Every Part (PFEP) or 9 Block planning is highly beneficial
+ To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and Outlook software
+ Working knowledge J.D. Edwards operating systems is beneficial
+ Exceptional written and verbal communications skills, including experience communicating with international suppliers
WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS:
+ Ability to move within office and manufacturing complex.
+ Perform general office functions.
+ Visual acuity needed for close detail work and computer use.
