Jacobs is seeking an eager Building Mechanical Engineer-in-Training to join our Water Business team based out of one of our offices (Burnaby, B.C. or Toronto, Ontario) in Canada. These complex projects play a vital role in the infrastructure that support the lives of our fellow citizens and residents of the communities we are a part of. The successful candidate will, under the guidance of our senior engineers, support designing mechanical systems within buildings, including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems, ensuring they meet sustainability, safety, efficiency, and client requirements. The candidate is expected to grow to then assume the responsibility of this work. You will work on various project stages in a multidisciplinary environment from concept to detailed design and through construction, coordinating closely with architects, technologists, engineers from other disciplines, and project managers.
In joining Jacobs, you will:
• With senior engineering support, develop mechanical design concept and detailed drawings for HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems using software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM tools.
• Assist and support engineers in carrying out engineering calculations for heat loads, airflow, duct sizing, pipe sizing, pump head, and equipment selection.
• Coordinate mechanical services design with other disciplines (electrical, architectural, structural, process) to ensure seamless integration.
• Under the supervision of senior engineers, perform construction administration duties such as shop drawing review, RFI response, construction inspection, and respond to client questions.
• Support senior engineers and/or senior designers in the on-going determination of building services requirements.
• Assisting in preparation of deliverables and products such as presentation materials, calculations, drawings, specifications, selections, and cost estimates related to heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing systems.
• Performing field investigation for incorporating existing conditions into construction documents.
• Ensure project work is undertaken is accordance with corporate health and safety policies and quality management systems.
• Stay up-to-date with industry trends, new technologies, and regulatory changes in mechanical building services.
* Bachelor’s degree in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Built Environment Engineering from a recognized university and registered (or be eligible for immediate registration) as an Engineer-in-Training in the province of your work.
* Excellent attention to detail.
* Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
* Experience working with the different Codes and Regulations that govern our work (including, but not limited to, local Building Codes, ASME/ASHRAE/NFPA/CSA technical codes, etc.)
* Working experience with NBC, BCBC, BCPC, SMACNA, ASHRAE codes and standards.
* Experience using HAP, AutoCAD, REVIT, Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Project, and Power Point.
* Physically able to climb ladders and enter utility manholes, tunnels, and other mechanical equipment spaces.
* Valid Driver's License in your province of residence.
Preferred Qualifications
* 2+ years’ experience (ideally with an engineering firm) designing HVAC and plumbing for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.
* Experience with design software (AutoCAD, Revit MEP, HAP, Elite, or similar). Revit experience is preferred. Bentley Microstation experience would be considered an asset.
* Experience delivering industrial, institutional, commercial, transportation, and water/wastewater infrastructure projects.
* Familiarity with ISO quality management systems.
* Excellent written and verbal communications.
* Experience working within internal multidisciplinary teams
* Experience with Building Energy Modeling and their software platforms (IES, eQuest, Energy Plus, HOT2000, RETScreen, etc.) would be considered an asset
* Experience with sustainability standards (LEED, Net Zero, Passive House, Envision) would be considered an asset
