Job summary: Performs technical, scientific, or research assignments. Develops theories for understanding, characterizing and organizing information on advanced materials (ie: elastomers, thermoplastics, composites, coatings) into a systematic and meaningful pattern for research into potential new material products. Plans project approaches and routinely formulates work plans, DOE. Responsible for setting and defining technical objectives and assessing results. Plans and executes laboratory research as a component of Technology and New Product Development roadmap efforts. May participate in development of patent applications. May provide guidance in setting up and executing experiments, testing for Technicians.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Conduct research into the structures and properties of materials in order to obtain information that could be used to develop new products or enhance existing ones.Identify and understand product performance requirements or critical to quality attributes and ability to tie those characteristics to chemistry and materials variables that can be modified to attain the targets.Devise and conduct testing methods to evaluate the effects of various conditions on particular materials. Plan & execute laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of materials having special characteristics. May provide instruction and guidance in executing experiments and gathering data to lab techniciansChoose suitable materials and testing methodologies for particular characteristics in new products, such as withstanding vibration, corrosion, pressure, temperature or impact as dictated by the particulars of a given development project. Design, research and develop novel materials or processes for specific purposes.Compile & analyze materials test results; prepare reports & technical presentations of study findings for the use of scientists, research engineers, and research technicians. Maintain effective interactions with scientists in other business units toward leveraging innovation achievements.Documentation of lab scale /demonstrator formulation and fabrication to facilitate transfer to scale up or commercialization. Facilitate the technology knowledge transfer to other functions within the organization such as manufacturing, engineering, sales, etc.Required Minimum Qualifications
Education/Certifications: PhD required in Materials Science (ie: Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemistry), Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field required; Six Sigma certification desired (GB – preferred, BB – ideal).
Skills and Experience:
Minimum of 3+ years related experience in materials development for polymers, plastics, elastomers, and/or coatings – could be academic or industrial experience).Strong depth of knowledge in material properties, modeling product performance and dynamic materials analysis in order to make technical decisions toward designing experiments for scientific materials program.Strong computational, problem-solving and analytical skills.Experience conducting experiments to calibrate and verify material models.Ability to clearly communicate the outcome of technical and commercial research to various technical and non-technical audiences, including customer meetings and technical conference presentations.An ability to take ownership and accountability for developing experimental timelines and meeting commitments.The ability to work well in a team and to coordinate the efforts of a team in support of a technical project or program.Preferred:
Knowledge of chemical structure – property relationships in materials such as elastomers, polymers, polymeric composites or coatings would be a plus.Experience characterizing chemical, mechanical and other properties of advanced materials using customized testing equipment would be a plusThe ability to develop a familiarity with appropriate experimental techniques, apparatus and procedures particular to their area of study as specified by the developmental program.Knowledge & experience with general product formulation, curing chemistry, coating technology and/or rheology.Experience applying for patents and/or utilizing IP practices/procedures to protect intellectual propertyEssential Job Functions
