Location: Northampton, MA (Fully Onsite)

Pay: $22.00–$25.00 per hour

Job Summary

The Billing & Collections Specialist is responsible for managing patient accounts receivable and supporting all billing, payment posting, and collections processes. This role serves as a primary point of contact for patients, insurance carriers, and external collection partners. The ideal candidate will ensure timely and accurate billing, maintain detailed documentation, and provide exceptional customer service in accordance with regulatory and organizational guideline

Key ResponsibilitiesCollections & Patient CommunicationServe as the liaison between patients, providers, and external collection agencies for accounts in collections.Contact patients about outstanding balances and establish payment plans when appropriate.Manage accounts sent to collections, including documentation, tracking, and reconciliation.Work with patients experiencing financial hardship and process hardship applications.Billing & Accounts ReceivableManage patient balances, aging reports, and collections reports using practice management and EMR systems.Prepare and send patient statements according to established billing cycles.Perform daily insurance follow-up, including research, analysis, and account documentation.Support month-end reporting related to collections, bad debt, and write‑offs.Payment ProcessingPost and allocate patient payments, including electronic and virtual credit card transactions.Close daily batches and reconcile point-of-sale activity accurately and on time.Customer ServiceRespond to billing, payment, and account inquiries professionally and accurately.Maintain detailed records of all patient and insurance communications.Provide backup support for billing functions as needed.Additional DutiesCollaborate with billing leadership to maintain accounts receivable within acceptable guidelines.Participate in special projects and additional responsibilities as assigned.Essential SkillsCollections experienceAccounts receivable knowledgeStrong customer service abilityMedical billing and collections experienceHigh accuracy and attention to detailProfessional and empathetic communication skillsStrong workflow and systems disciplineOutbound calling experienceData entry proficiencyGeneral healthcare knowledgeQualificationsHigh school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferredMedical billing or coding certification, or equivalent hands‑on experience1–3 years of medical office experience including billing, insurance, and customer servicePrior collections experience strongly preferredKnowledge of medical billing processes, insurance follow-up, and basic codingProficiency with EMR, practice management, and billing softwareStrong computer skills (Word, Outlook, Excel)Excellent written and verbal communication skillsStrong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple prioritiesAbility to work independently and collaborativelyProfessionalism, discretion, and commitment to patient serviceWork ScheduleContract Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM (30‑minute unpaid lunch)Post‑Conversion Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (30‑minute unpaid lunch)Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Northampton, MA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
