Sanford Health Behavioral Health in Dickinson is looking for individuals who are seeking a career in Behavioral Health. This position of mentor will provide opportunities for hands on experience with youth and young adults as well as their families.

Hours are flexible and average about 10 hours per week.

The focus of this position will be to support individuals who are participating in the Healthy Transitions Program , youth and young adults ages 16-25 who have been identified as being at risk for or having a severe mental illness or severe emotional disturbance, to stay in school, complete alternative education programs, as well as, helping participants develop advocacy and problem solving skills.

Mentors will have opportunities to receive specific training in the areas of behavioral health and mentoring programs. Problem solving and advocacy.

Job Description

Regularly check on target students’ attendance, grades and behavior, providing regular feedback to students, communicate regularly with families and initiate efforts to keep youth engaged in school.  

 Collaborate with adults already involved with youth- such as teachers, care coordinators, counselors, probation officers, and social workers 

Communicate regularly with teachers to gather and share information about student progress 

Facilitate communication and promote problem solving between home and school. Contact parents via phone, home visits, and email to share information and develop plans to re-engage students in school and promote school success 

Determine and document student progress and mentor efforts on a regular basis 

Attend staff meetings and student meetings as required 

Communicate in a timely manner with student, parents, supervisors and school personnel 

Serve as a positive role model to mentees 

Have the ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries with students, parents, teachers, peers, and supervisor 

Be the ability to interact professionally with representatives of the organizations, agencies and schools  

Have a strong interest in working to solve problems in the target schools 

Possess effective communication skills 

Possess good organizational and the ability to follow through with assigned tasks 

Be flexible in accepting service assignments 

Be willing to work independently and/or as a team in addressing community issues 

Be truthful and timely in reporting your service hours 

Be able to respond quickly to any inquiries made by supervisors 

Interest in working with high school students and families 

Ability and willingness to work with families and adults using a non-blaming approach 

Reliable means of transportation  

Interns may also be assigned to individuals who are not currently in school to assist with connecting program participants to resources that will assist with employment and/or alternative education to achieve High School Diploma.  

Interns will provide support to all mentees assigned to assist in overcoming obstacles.  

Qualifications

Current enrollment or recent graduate of an Associate or Bachelor's degree program from an accredited college or university.

Knowledge of healthcare industry preferred. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
