Offers may vary depending on the circumstances of each case. **Summary:** In conjunction with key departmental leaders, the Bed Manager provides oversight and direction for efficient patient flow and appropriate patient placement throughout Rush University Medical Center (RUMC). Facilitates a collegial, patient-centered environment that is supportive of continuous quality improvement. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. **Other information:** **Required Job Qualifications:** • Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure. • Earned Nursing Degree at the Baccalaureate level or higher. • Familiar with principles of epidemiology. • Analytical ability. • Flexibility. • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills in stressful / difficult situations. • Ability to interpret complex organizational systems. • The ability to access / utilize clinical information systems. **Preferred Job Qualifications:** • Three years of clinical nursing experience, Critical Care and/or management experience. **Physical Demands:** • The ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift. • Work conditions may include exposure to potentially infectious materials and/or patients. **Responsibilities:** 1. Forecasts the future (imminent and one-week projected) bed situation utilizing ER activity, reservations, OR/Procedural/Radiology schedules, anticipated discharges, and census prediction algorithms. 2. Coordinates communication among nursing, SSO, admitting, environmental services, Utilization Management, the Rush Transfer Center (RTC), the JRB Admissions Coordinator, the Administrator on-call and all other patient admission/discharge/transfer points. 3. Develops and implements a daily bed triage plan that will optimize the timely and clinically appropriate patient placement based on the above information. 4. Determines bed assignments based on the patient's clinical needs and personal preference (as appropriate), unit staffing and age appropriate bed availability. 5. Assists Unit management/charge nurses in problem solving discharge/transfer and bed availability issues. 6. In the event of multiple requests/limited availability of specialty beds, assesses the patients to determine their immediate clinical requirements and evaluates unit activities/resources to establish the priority for patient transfers/placement across the institution. 7. Maximizes utilization and accuracy of the Tele-tracking system. 8. Notifies appropriate administrative and clinical personnel with potential bed shortage to determine admission priorities. 9. Facilitates collection of admission and discharge data and makes recommendations for systems improvements based on the data. 10. Activates the Rush Peak Census Procedure to prevent the interruption/cancellation of pre-scheduled admissions, procedures, surgeries etc. and to avoid the implementation of the hospital "Bypass" procedure. 11. Responds to other unusual occurrences as appropriate. Rush is an equal opportunity employer.
