**Overview**
Are you looking to join a fast-paced team delivering industry leading products? Microsoft’s Surface is looking for a talented individual to join the Battery team to design leading edge battery packs. As a Battery Modeling Engineer, you will be working on the latest technology and materials to give Surface products energy sources that are compact, lightweight, and bring the best experience to users.
As a **Battery Modeling Engineer** on the Surface Battery Development Team, you will lead the development and application of physics-based and data-driven battery modeling/simulation capabilities to enable simulation-driven design decisions, support BMS algorithm development, and inform empirical testing. This role combines advanced battery modeling expertise with strong data science skills to support the development, optimization, and analysis of battery systems. You will design and implement physics-based and data-driven models for lithium-ion and next-generation batteries, while also supporting data pipelines and tools to manage large-scale experimental and operational datasets.

**Responsibilities**
+ Develop physics-based (SPM, P2D, etc.) and/or data-driven battery models using internal data and collaboration with external partners.
+ Develop and translate aging modes/mechanisms into new and existing models.
+ Create and oversee testing/DoEs to parameterize models and validate model performance.
+ Apply developed models to improve engineering processes, workflows, and designs - supporting cross-team usage.
+ Define future simulation/modeling capabilities and strategy.
+ Technical lead, expert, and point of contact on battery simulation/modeling capabilities and solutions.
+ Defining and guiding next generation battery data analytics.
**Qualifications**
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Doctorate in Chemistry (Electrical), Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering AND 1+ year(s) experience working with batteries manufactured overseas, testing characterization screenings, lithium-ion battery component development or implementation, running battery tests, and product design (e.g., consumer electronics)
+ OR Master's Degree in Chemistry (Electrical), Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering AND 5+ years experience working with batteries manufactured overseas, testing characterization screenings, lithium-ion battery component development or implementation, running battery tests, and product design (e.g., consumer electronics)
+ OR Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry (Electrical), Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering AND 7+ years experience working with batteries manufactured overseas, testing characterization screenings, lithium-ion battery component development or implementation, running battery tests, and product design (e.g., consumer electronics)
+ OR equivalent experience.
**Other Requirements:**
+ Willing to relocate to Redmond, WA.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Minimum of 5 years of experience in battery modeling and analytics, with a strong foundation in electrochemistry and thermal dynamics.
+ Expertise in li-ion battery physics-based (SPM, P2D, etc.) and data-driven/machine learning approaches using tools such as PyBamm, COMSOL, GT Suite, Simulink, and 3D FEA simulations.
+ Skilled in modeling from cell-level to pack-level, including thermal and aging analysis, and building scalable data pipelines leveraging Azure tools (Microsoft Fabric, Data Factory, Synapse, Power BI).
+ Proficient in Python for scripting, automation, data manipulation, and automating analysis of large datasets.
+ Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent expertise.
+ Deep curiosity for machine learning and AI to accelerate understanding of battery behavior.
+ Familiar with emerging battery technologies for consumer electronics and high-volume supply chains, including collaboration with overseas suppliers.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills and a passion for applying data-driven insights to battery design.
+ Collaborative team player with experience in cross-functional projects and technical discussions to enhance battery design and manufacturing.

Battery Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
