Job Title: Base & Gravel Crew Supervisor
Department: Earthwork & Infrastructure
Reports To: VP of Earthwork & Infrastructure
Location: Various project sites across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Montana
Status: Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Pay Rate: $35–$50 per hour (exact compensation based on experience, skills, and education) plus fringe benefits
Job Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time | Seasonal
Typical Schedule: Project-dependent; approximately 70+ hours per week during construction season
Start Date: February 2026
Position Summary
The Base & Gravel Crew Supervisor oversees daily operations for subgrade preparation, aggregate base placement, and gravel work on heavy highway and road construction projects. This role ensures all activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications and quality standards. The Supervisor provides leadership, coordinates with project management and survey teams, and maintains clear communication to achieve production goals and deliver high-quality results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Crew Leadership & Oversight
• Direct and supervise crew members performing grading, shaping, compacting, and finishing of subgrade and aggregate base layers.
• Coordinate material placement and compaction activities to maintain project schedules.
• Assign tasks, monitor performance, and ensure adherence to safety and quality standards.
• Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.
Project Coordination
• Communicate with Project Managers, Foremen, and Survey/Grade Control teams to verify elevations and tolerances.
• Coordinate with trucking and material dispatch for timely delivery and efficient placement.
• Review project plans, specifications, and blueprints to ensure compliance with design grades and cross-sections.
Safety & Compliance
• Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations; conduct weekly safety meetings.
• Inspect equipment and work areas to identify and correct hazards.
• Maintain compliance with environmental, DOT, and project-specific requirements.
Quality Control
• Verify base and gravel placement meets density, thickness, and grade specifications.
• Perform visual checks and coordinate with testing personnel for compaction and material sampling.
• Correct deficiencies before paving or surfacing activities begin.
Equipment & Material Management
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of graders, rollers, dozers, and trucks.
• Report equipment issues promptly to maintenance teams.
• Monitor material quantities to prevent waste and maintain accurate documentation.
Administrative Duties
• Complete daily reports, crew timesheets, and production logs.
• Track installed quantities and communicate progress to project management.
• Assist with training, coaching, and performance evaluations for crew members.

Skills and Requirements
Qualifications
• Experience:
○ 3–5 years in heavy highway or road construction.
○ 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead operator role preferred.
○ Strong understanding of subgrade preparation, aggregate base placement, and compaction techniques.
• Licenses:
○ Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred with acceptable driving record.
• Knowledge:
○ OSHA safety regulations and DOT standards.
• Skills & Competencies:
○ Ability to read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and survey data.
○ Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
○ Familiarity with GPS machine control systems and grade-checking tools preferred.
○ Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and standing.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, dust, noise).
• Tolerance for long hours and extended periods of standing and walking on uneven terrain.
Work Environment
• Field-based construction sites with exposure to heavy equipment, traffic, and changing conditions.
• Seasonal overtime and extended hours during peak construction season.
• Requires travel to multiple job sites; overnight stays may be necessary.
