Responsibilities

Comply with Barrick’s established health and safety policies, procedures, practices and Occupational Health and Safety Acts.

Promptly report and correct unsafe acts and conditions.

Actively ensure that fatal risks are understood and critical controls are maintained.

Perform inspections in accordance with mine standards and OEM specifications.

Lead, supervise, train, and mentor a team of Auto Electricians, Automation Technicians, and HV Electricians.

Assign and prioritize daily, weekly, and major repairs, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and timely completion of work.

Coordinate team schedules and shift rotations, ensuring appropriate staffing levels to support 24/7 operations.

Ensure proper application of Lock-Out or Tag-Out and Try-Out (LOTOTO), Permit to Work (PTW) systems, arc flash procedures, and mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Conduct routine safety audits, inspections, and hazard assessments of electrical work areas and equipment.

Lead or participate in incident investigations (RCFA) related to electrical failures or safety incidents, implementing effective corrective actions.

Provide advanced technical expertise, oversight, and guidance for the diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of complex electrical systems.

Ensure the use of appropriate diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, thermal imagers, hipot testers, and software) for accurate fault finding.

Oversee the execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on all electrical components of underground mobile equipment (e.g., LHDs, jumbos, haul trucks, shotcrete machines, and other ancillary equipment).

Collaborate with the Planning and Reliability Superintendent, other Foremen, and Operations to plan, schedule, and prioritize electrical maintenance activities.

Ensure the timely requisition and management of spare parts, tools, and materials for electrical work.

Manage and coordinate external contractors, OEMs, and specialist vendors for specific electrical tasks, diagnostics, and warranty claims.

Provide input into budget forecasting and resource allocation for the electrical department.

Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for electrical maintenance, including Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), equipment availability, and maintenance backlog.

Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and testing within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Proactively identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintainability, and overall electrical system performance.

Evaluate and recommend new electrical technologies, diagnostic tools, and automation solutions relevant to underground mobile equipment.

Collaborate with Engineering and OEMs to implement modifications, upgrades, and best practices.

Stay abreast of industry trends, new electrical codes, and emerging technologies, particularly in battery-electric vehicle systems and advanced automation.

Provide feedback to OEMs to support continuous improvement of equipment performance and operation.

Ensure accurate data entry into fleet tracking software as part of the fleet maintenance program, including work orders, time allocation, and related computer-based tasks.

Maintain electrical and instrumentation equipment, including PLC control systems.

Perform electrical and instrumentation fault finding.

Conduct statutory testing and inspections on all electrical distribution systems.

Report to the Mobile Fleet Maintenance Superintendent on all planned and unplanned work relating to auto electrical and automation systems.

Perform any additional duties and tasks as required by your supervisor.

Develop and upskill the national workforce.

Ensure the Environment, Health, and Safety of all underground electrical personnel within the UG complex, ensuring full compliance with company procedures and applicable standards.

Qualification Requirements

Relevant Auto Electrical Trade Certificate.

Sandvik Automation and Auto Electrical System Certification.

Computer literacy is essential- Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, ERP and MRPII packages (SAP, Ellipse, Pronto, Oracle etc.)

Certification in air conditioning systems repairs.

Experience and Skills Requirements

Minimum of 7–10 years’ experience as an Automation or Auto Electrician, with a substantial portion dedicated to heavy mobile equipment in a mining or heavy industrial environment.

Must have a tertiary qualification and the ability to read engineering drawings related to UG mobile equipment.

Good understanding of the UG Mining operation and maintenance activities.

Previous experience in the installation and implementation of automation program packages, including data collection and tracking capabilities.

At least 3–5 years of demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience within an electrical team, preferably in an underground environment.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with Sandvik equipment, particularly on their auto electrical systems and automation drives.

Good working knowledge of auto electrical maintenance planning and scheduling.

Working knowledge of equipment safety standards.

Proven experience in maintenance practices and techniques.

Experience in troubleshooting and repairing air conditioning systems is required.

Experience in the mining industry is essential.

Strong time management and planning skills.

Strong analytical skills, with the ability to think logically and clearly, and a high level of attention to detail.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment safely and effectively.

Ability to perform safety inspections and identify potential hazards.
