Within Rolls-Royce’s Defence sector, the Submarines business designs, manufactures and supports the nuclear power and propulsion plant at the heart of the nation’s submarine capability.  We provide products and services that span the nuclear plant lifecycle, having supported the Royal Navy for over 50 years. We are embarking on an exciting growth period following the AUKUS announcement assisting Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines and wider novel nuclear opportunities for example.

Successful candidates will be self starters, be comfortable in working within an ambiguous scope and have strong stakeholder management skills. They will undertake information gathering and analytical activities by drawing on business, customer, industry knowledge and account for the changing technology and political landscape.

From these inputs, you will make reasoned recommendations, subsequently authoring and coordinating the production of analyses, strategies and campaigns for the Submarines business. The subject matter will cover a range of business areas, such as products, services, people, skills & training and special projects.  You will identify business issues and opportunities, offering-up perspectives on solutions for senior review.  Working with business colleagues to support the development of campaign strategy and subsequent pursuit of opportunities.  Identifying and assessing key strategic questions to stimulate development of customer and broader business strategies.  You will produce reports and deliver presentations for senior audiences, to inform and direct a range of business activities in the nuclear sector both domestically and internationally.

You will develop and own new campaigns, developing the business strategy and where appropriate the sales plan, the business model and the bid plan, including the bid.  Ownership of campaign plans includes the creation of value propositions and sales offers for both new and existing opportunities, including communication plans and the associated articulation.  You will pursue influential positions with our customers and prospective customers, to get the earliest possible start on opportunities.  Management of the interface within the internal stakeholders, across multiple functions including technical, finance and commercial functions as well as that with senior leadership team.  This will include stakeholder input, project planning and resourcing, including the engagement of subject matter experts.

You must be an independent operator, able to take instruction as high-level objectives, and organise your own time and conflicting requirements to deliver your agreed output. You will be comfortable and productive working with many and varied parts of the business and an international customer base, to gather and analyse information and develop insights and recommendations. You will be a competent and experienced practitioner of analysis and developing strategies and campaigns. The ability to communicate complex notions in both the spoken and written word is essential, and you must also be confident in presenting and concise report writing for executive audiences.

This role is based at our site in Derby, but flexibility to travel within the UK, and potentially internationally, will be required to attend events/meetings in support of the key tasks of the role. Current working arrangements offer a flexible working environment between home and the office in Derby; however, you will be expected to attend the office at least 3 days a week.

What you’ll be doing:

Identify key strategic questions to stimulate the development of customer, technology, and broader business strategies and campaigns.

Deliver and coordinate the production of business strategy and campaign reports and presentations.

Conduct and make recommendations for business case analysis activity.

Working with Customer Strategy colleagues and Key Account Managers, source and analyse market intelligence specific to a set of accounts, assisting with customer strategy.

Maintain a good understanding of the product portfolio and capabilities of the Rolls-Royce Submarines business to inform analysis, strategy and campaigns.

Develop the communications strategy within the business & externally and deliver it with proportionate routine communication through a variety of engaging media.

Bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc) in an engineering, analytical subject, or equivalent.

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of market information and intelligence.

Make reasoned recommendations from research and market analysis.

Ability to write formal reports and deliver impactful presentations for a variety of audiences, including senior management and executives.

Contextual macro-economic and market knowledge and understanding.

Autonomy and independent workload management.

Able to confidently work with and influence wider business personnel using clear communication and relationship building skills.

Previous experience in customer facing roles.

Strong and broad communication skills, externally and internally, with the ability to communicate using a variety of media in an engaging way, including up to executive level in concise definitive terms.

Experience with at least one of strategy, bidding, business models and/or campaigns in a technical business.

A demonstrated record of working flexibly and delivering in a complex and dynamic environment.

Desirable Skills

Experience of interfacing with, or working in, international partners and governments with an established network.

Previous experience in negotiating campaigns.

Contextual macro-economic and market knowledge and understanding in Australia and in the Indo-Pacific region.

Defence and civil nuclear experience.

Master's degree in an analytical subject, or equivalent.

Current/recent experience of working in UK Defence or closely related business environment.

An awareness of the Defence and Civil nuclear sector.

Experience of quantitative and qualitative market analysis techniques.

Domain knowledge of Rolls-Royce Submarines products, services, and engineering capabilities.

Understanding of financial analysis methods & valuation principles.
