No County Kings Street Address 1 Metrotech Center N. 3rd Floor City Brooklyn State NY Zip Code 11201 Duties Description Assignment: The Mental Hygiene Legal Service (“MHLS”) provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals with mental and developmental disabilities, and those alleged to be in need of mental health services, in legal matters including civil and criminal commitment, treatment over objection, guardianship, sex offender civil management, and assisted outpatient treatment. MHLS attorneys regularly appear in the New York courts in difficult cases concerning involuntary hospitalization and psychiatric treatment. Frequent fieldwork, including meeting with clients at psychiatric hospitals, prisons, other facilities or private residences, is required. MHLS attorneys advocate informally on behalf of clients and represent them at administrative hearings. This position will be responsible for representing individuals in every type of case handled by MHLS but will focus primarily on providing legal representation and advocacy to individuals who are offenders in custody for a sexual offense conviction and are subject to the New York State Sexual Offender Management and Treatment Act (“SOMTA”). This involves representation of clients throughout all aspects of litigation, including jury and bench trials as well as hearings before the NYS Supreme Court. MHLS attorneys also manage client interviews, expert witness evaluation, research and motion practice. Candidates for this position must have litigation experience as well as excellent research and writing skills. Jury trial experience is preferred.
