These are full-time (10-month appointment) benefits eligible positions.

Position Overview:

The Athletic Trainer supports MIT’s Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) through the Kasser Sports Medicine Center. This role serves a diverse athletic community, including 29 NCAA Division III varsity teams, 4 Division I rowing teams, and participants in PE, club sports, intramurals, and recreational programs. The Athletic Trainer applies best practices in injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and health education. Responsibilities include clinical care, event coverage, administrative duties, and mentorship of athletic training students, all in alignment with professional standards and MIT’s core competencies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

Under the guidance of the Director of Sports Medicine and Senior Associate Head Athletic Trainer:

- Provide comprehensive athletic training services including injury prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.

- Maintain effective communication with student-athletes, coaches, and medical staff regarding health, safety, and readiness to participate.

- Document and manage confidential medical records using appropriate terminology and systems.

- Refer cases beyond scope of practice to appropriate medical professionals.

- Serve as a preceptor for athletic training students, providing orientation, education, and evaluation.

- Educate students on health insurance procedures related to athletic injuries.

- Coordinate medical clearance for intercollegiate athletes and ensure compliance with CPR/AED, First Aid, and concussion protocols.

- Manage supply acquisition and equipment maintenance in accordance with MIT procurement policies.

- Serve as Drug Testing Coordinator and implement related policies and education.

- Collect and analyze injury data to inform prevention strategies.

- Participate in professional development and continuing education.

- Represent DAPER on campus-wide committees and at institutional events.

- Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Supervision

Direct supervision: Director of Sports Medicine / AHCA

Assisted by: Senior Associate Head Athletic Trainer

Indirect supervision: Department Head/Director of Athletics, Associate Head Athletic Trainer, Director of Student Health Services, and Team Physicians

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

- Must possess gross and fine motor coordination, manual dexterity, and physical strength to lift up to 50 lbs.

- Capable of responding promptly to emergencies and performing tasks such as CPR, aquatic therapy, and wound care.

- Able to work in varied environmental conditions and maintain focus during frequent interruptions.

- Exposure to bodily fluids, chemicals, and physical injury risks is expected.

Equipment & Skills Required

- Use of medical and therapeutic equipment (e.g., AED, stethoscope, goniometer, therapeutic modalities)

- Proficiency in documentation, assessment, and emergency response

- Familiarity with software: Sports Ware, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Google Calendar, FileMaker Pro

Requirements

Master’s Degree required (Master of Science preferred) BOC Certification and eligibility for Massachusetts licensure Experience with high-risk sports and clinical education Valid driver’s license CPR/AED and First Aid instructor certification (must be maintained) Employment contingent on successful background check
