Your Day to Day

As the Assistant Manager for the Owensboro Analytical Science (OAS) Laboratory, you will play a key leadership role on 1st shift, supporting the OAS Lab Senior Manager and helping to guide scientific personnel in achieving analytical objectives in compliance with ISO 17025. Your responsibilities include:

 

Laboratory Leadership & Operations

Assist in planning, coordinating, and managing daily 1st‑shift laboratory activities, ensuring internal customer expectations are met.Oversee personnel and instrumentation resource distribution in alignment with OAS goals, projects, and operational needs.Provide leadership support and serve as acting manager during absences, with authority to make workflow and project decisions.

 

People Development & Performance

Support, mentor, and evaluate scientific personnel to maintain high performance and strong engagement.Ensure staff competence and oversee ongoing training and capability development.Set goals, monitor progress, and provide coaching and corrective actions as necessary.

 

Scientific Excellence & Quality Compliance

Ensure method development, validation, documentation, and implementation in compliance with ISO 17025 and regulatory requirements.  Perform routine analyses and provide advanced instrumental troubleshooting, focusing on generating high‑quality, timely results.Support sample control systems and analysis scheduling to ensure accurate and timely data delivery.

 

Continuous Improvement & Laboratory Innovation

Identify and implement improvements in methods, processes, instrumentation, and automation to enhance efficiency and capacity.Provide input on equipment upgrades, service contracts, and capital/expense planning.Maintain a safe, well‑organized laboratory environment and ensure daily facility upkeep.

 

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with internal partners including Production, QA, Product Development, Regulatory, IT, Finance, and Swedish Match Regulatory & Scientific Affairs.Serve as a key scientific liaison and contribute insights to support broader analytical and operational needs.

 

Who We’re Looking For

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or a related scientific fieldLaboratory supervisory experience required.Strong background in analytical chemistry, instrumentation troubleshooting, laboratory operations, and method development/validation.Experience working under ISO 17025 accreditation is highly preferred.Skilled in analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis, microbiology procedures, and lab automation.Knowledge of laboratory software, LIMS, computer technology, and project management.Strong leadership qualities with the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide technical teams.Demonstrated ability to foster a positive work environment, drive continuous improvement, and maintain high safety and quality standards.Ability to work additional or different shifts as needed.
