RWJBH is seeking an Assistant Director for 4 Tower - Post Intensive Care Unit I at our New Brunswick campus,

This is a Full-time, Night position; 80 hours/pay period 2 weeks,

7p-730am, 3 shifts per week in staffing as Charge Nurse with 8hr office day per pay period,

Head Nurse assignments vary from 0-2 patients dependent on census and acuity of the shift when in staffing,

Office hours are not bedside,

4 Tower- Post Intensive Care Unit-I is a busy 32 bed cardiac unit,

We see a range of telemetry, medical-surgical, and intermediate care patient acuities,

Types of patients we care for include post cardiac procedures, sepsis, dialysis, heart failure, and respiratory failure,

The AD is a registered professional nurse who under the direction of the Nursing Director coordinates available resources to efficiently and effectively provide professional nursing care of a quality consistent with the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Standards of Care to the patients assigned to his/her unit,

The Nurse Manager demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to make decisions regarding the provision of age-appropriate care for the unit s patient population,

Ensure that 4 Tower is in compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulations,

Education:

Licensed to practice Professional Nursing in New Jersey,

Bachelor s degree or equivalent required,

Exception may be made if candidate meets other requirements and is actively pursuing a bachelor s degree; the completion of the degree is expected within 5 years of acceptance of the position,

National certification in a clinical area preferred,

Experience: 1-3 years relative clinical practice

Job Functions:

Development/Management of Personnel

Facilitates the safe and effective functioning of the unit as demonstrated by: Interviewing and hiring unlicensed personnel,

Interviewing and hiring licensed personnel in collaboration with Nursing Director,

Facilitates the orientation process for new employees as demonstrated by: Making assignments that maintain preceptor-orientee relationship,

Working the preceptor-orientee to solve any problems,

Ensuring that orientees complete the unit-based orientation within an appropriate individualized time frame,

Contributes to the professional growth and development of staff by: Continuously assessing patient care to evaluate staff knowledge and patterns of performance,

Counseling staff on identified areas for improvement,

Evaluating the staff performance as demonstrated by the completion of the performance evaluation in a timely manner,

Counseling and implementing appropriate disciplinary action,

Planning/coordinating unit based education programs as identified by unit needs,

Considers staff participation in safety/quality initiatives when completing employee performance appraisals

Management of Patient Care Delivery Maintains clinical expertise as demonstrated by:

Providing care that is safe, effective and consistent with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Standards of Patient Care,

Applying knowledge of growth and development over the life span,

Applying the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit -i,

Promoting effective resource utilization related to clinical practice,

Using effective communication strategies with patients, families, physicians, staff members and professionals to achieve desirable or acceptable patient outcomes,

Participates in the development of performance improvement projects including: design, performance measurement analysis and improvement,

Provides open lines of communication for reporting medical errors and near misses using RWJUH organizational tools and resources,

Professional Development:

Attends formal educational seminars/classes to enhance knowledge on both clinical and administrative issues,

Unit Management:

Plans staffing in accordance with established standards as demonstrated by: Completing and posting schedules according to policy and procedure,

Completing schedules in a manner that balances personal requests and unit needs,

Collaborating with staff coordinator to ensure safe staffing patterns,

Ensuring accurate and timely completion of patient classification system,

Monitoring and evaluating the standards of care for the unit,

Ensuring accurate and timely completion of mechanisms used for payroll purposes,

Participating in quality and cost initiatives as demonstrated by: Participating with Head Nurse group in working on identified areas for quality improvement,

Assisting Nursing Directors with the management of the daily operational budget -salary and non-salary,

Adopts at least two patient safety/quality initiatives from the National Quality Forum Safety Practices or other credible safety agency, as pertinent to the scope of services,

Demonstrates improvement in selected safety/quality indicators over time,

Communicates and documents progress in selected safety/quality initiatives to employees during regular staff meetings and as needed,

Demonstrate an awareness of patient safety initiatives at RWJUH, including but not limited to:

The current National Patient Safety Goals Federal, state and voluntary regulatory standards JCAHO, CMS, NJDHSS Unit or departmental specific safety initiatives Participate in the Infection Prevention and at least one other patient safety initiative while exhibiting an understanding of and compliance with RWJUH protocols, policies and procedures Demonstrates proper handwashing technique and participation in unit or department-specific infection prevention projects Handwritten information is readable when assessed Reports errors, high risk events --including medication-related events- and near-misses to his/her immediate supervisor for proper follow-
