Associate Primate Behaviorist

The Associate Animal Behaviorist serves as a technical expert within the operational team, with a specialized focus on non-human primate (NHP) behavior and health. This role involves coordinating activities related to toxicology and metabolism studies, ensuring all procedures are conducted in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), and applicable regulatory guidelines. The Behaviorist is responsible for performing technical procedures across various research areas, monitoring animal health and welfare in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and supporting facility standards to maintain AAALAC accreditation. This position requires a strong understanding of animal behavior, research protocols, and regulatory compliance to ensure ethical and effective study outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform behavior assessments, prepare observation reports and provide recommendations for animal behavior directives to veterinary staff.

Evaluate social groups for compatibility, establish and lead resolution actions for compatibility issues, in combination with vet, operational team, or senior behaviorist staff.

Perform social introductions under direction of veterinary or senior behavior staff.

Implement behavior management strategies in accordance with SOPs, study specific procedures and behavior management plans.

Support the conduct of behavioral studies and investigations/assessment of new behavior management procedures/techniques.

Provision of additional enrichment and performing behavior interventions as directed by veterinary staff or behavior staff.

Maintaining metrics on behavior management initiatives and social housing.

Ability to understand normal species-specific behavior.

Ability to effectively describe and communicate animal behavior observations using in accordance with established professional behavior terminology.

Understand behavior management procedures including enrichment, positive reinforcement training and animal socialization.

Learn how to use office and laboratory data capture software applications.

Effective personal organization and time management skills.

Perform other duties as assigned.

How you will be rewarded:

Pay range: $25/hr.-$35/hr.

Work hours: 6:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Additional Requirements: Work schedule may include occasional weekends and holidays based on business needs.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree in animal science, animal behavior, biology, psychology, or related life science field.

Minimum of 3 years’ professional animal experience.  Experience may be substituted for education requirements.

Experience working in GLP environment.

Experience working within multi-discipline research team.

Preferred Experience/Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in animal behavior. 

Professional certification preferred (ALAT).

3 years of professional non-human primate (NHP) working experience preferred.
