The roleAs the Associate Director of Engineering for the Shopping Platform at HelloFresh, you will lead the engineering vision and execution for one of the most critical surfaces in our digital customer experience. Your organization owns the platform layer that powers shopping, browsing, and personalization experiences across our global brands.
As we prepare to scale our menu by 10x and more, you will build the backbone for this growth by architecting our core search, personalization, customer targeting, and engagement systems to perform at scale. You will oversee multiple cross-functional engineering teams across key platform workstreams, managing a combined organization of 15+ engineers across Berlin and Poland.
What you’ll do Lead, inspire and grow multiple cross-functional teams within an organization of 15+ engineers, while fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and operational excellence across the organization. Drive architectural and design decisions in the team, having a strong focus on the highest quality standards, engineering best practices, and operational excellence. Own end-to-end delivery of complex, multi-quarter initiatives spanning self-service backoffice capabilities, intelligent shopping experiences with AI assistants, and platform performance optimization. Establish engineering standards and practices across teams including code quality, system reliability, security, and DevOps excellence Lead cross-functional collaboration with Product, Data Science, ML Engineering, and business stakeholders Drive technical hiring and capacity planning across multiple teams, including backend engineers, frontend engineers, data engineers, QA engineers, and technical leadership roles. Mentor senior engineers and technical leads while building a strong technical leadership pipeline and promoting HelloFresh DNA across the organization. What you’ll bring Proven success in leading multiple engineering teams (10+ engineers) in fast-paced, high-growth environments, including mentoring senior-level contributors across diverse workstreams. A strong track record in designing and maintaining platforms that support multiple feature teams efficiently. Deep technical expertise in building scalable microservices and event-driven architectures, such as those using Kafka. Solid understanding of DevOps principles and hands-on familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The ability to navigate short-term delivery needs while keeping long-term architectural health and scalability in focus. A collaborative leadership style that motivates teams and supports individuals in achieving their best work. Familiarity with AI/ML infrastructure or conversational commerce systems—such as integrating AWS Bedrock or developing recommendation and personalization engines—is a welcome plus.Above all, we are looking for people who will make HelloFresh better.
