Associate Director of Cloud Platforms – Information Technology – Enterprise Infrastructure

Department Overview
The Information Technology Services (ITS) department at the University of Virginia (UVA) provides the foundational technology, systems, and services that enable the University’s teaching, research, and administrative functions. The Enterprise Infrastructure team supports cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments with a focus on innovation, resiliency, and security.

Position Summary
The University of Virginia seeks an Associate Director of Cloud Platforms to lead the strategic direction, partner development efforts, and ongoing management of its cloud infrastructure. This role ensures high-performance, secure, and scalable systems across our academic, research, and administrative environments in AWS, Azure, and GCP. In addition, the Associate Director will provide technical management of key SaaS platforms including M365, Fabric, Intune, and Jamf.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading teams of managers, engineers, and developers while advancing DevOps and FinOps capabilities to automate and streamline the provisioning and management of public cloud and SaaS services in a complex higher education setting.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of managers, engineers, developers, and support staff in building core IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS services aligned with customer needs, resiliency, and cost efficiency.

Champion a workplace culture built on high performance standards, responsibility, lifelong learning, and dedication to customer satisfaction.

Coordinate cross-functional collaboration and solutions development with other IT teams, academic departments, and research units.

Public Cloud Infrastructure

Continuously iterate the design and cost optimization of UVA’s public cloud environments.

Consolidate CI/CD and DevOps practices to scale capability and ensure cross-team resiliency.

Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver common solutions and provide robust service platforms for innovation.

SaaS Platform Development

Build out capabilities and resource models for core SaaS platforms including Microsoft 365, Microsoft Fabric, Intune, and Jamf.

Evaluate third-party integrations for operational value and risk, and partner with product managers and governance groups to shape development roadmaps.

Security & Compliance

Ensure that cloud systems adhere to institutional security policies and regulatory requirements (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA, CMMC).

Partner with Information Security to implement secure architecture and incident response procedures.

Project & Stakeholder Management

Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and partnerships with internal and external service owners.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field.

5+ years of progressively responsible experience in public cloud environments, with at least 3 years in a management or team lead role.

Proven experience with CI/CD and cloud automation.

Demonstrated experience developing solutions across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS environments.

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant industry certifications (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP Certifications, ITIL).

Strong understanding of academic and research computing needs.

Essential Skills

Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in a dynamic academic environment.

Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams, with a focus on mentoring and developing talent.

Physical Demands
This position is primarily sedentary, involving extensive use of desktop computers. The role requires the ability to move about the office and occasionally attend in-person meetings and events.

Position Type & Work Location
This is a full-time, exempt position based at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Hybrid

Salary Range: 160-170k based on experience and expertise
