Associate Director for Counseling Services

The University of Virginia’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional for the position of Associate Director for Counseling Services. The Associate Director for Counseling Services is part of the CAPS Leadership Team within the Department of Student Health and Wellness. This position provides leadership and oversight of counseling services at CAPS. Job responsibilities include:

Creates and maintains a master clinical scheduleMonitors and manages wait times for intakes and screeningsEnsures compliance with relevant ethical codes, state/federal regulations and institutional policies and proceduresCollaborates closely with other Student Health and Wellness units, including Medical Services, the Student Disability Access Center, and Wellbeing servicesServes on and leads Student Health committees such as Patient Care Committee and the Mental Health Policies and Procedures CommitteeLeads the CAPS Clinical Services CommitteeCreates and updates templates and forms used for clinical documentation and information gatheringDevelops relationships and implements policies that foster strong interdepartmental collaboration and communicationProvides supervision for CAPS counseling and care management staff, specifically psychologists, counselors, and social workersSupervises CAPS Office Manager and ensures coordination of front offices procedures with clinical servicesHelps with hiring, onboarding, and orientation of new staffWorks jointly with Student Affairs colleagues, especially Care and Support Services, to provide comprehensive support to studentsManages CAPS reenrollment processReviews and responds to student requests to change counselors or extend servicesAlong with Associate Director of Psychiatry, coordinates services with other counseling agencies on-Grounds (e.g., Women's Center, Ainsworth Clinic, Athletic Department)Participates in the Association for the Coordination of Counseling Center Clinical Services (ACCCCS)Maintains a small caseload (40% clinical expectation) and participates in the Emergency Consult ServiceParticipates in afterhours crisis coverage rotationParticipates in outreach and community consultationOffers didactic training and/or supervision as part of CAPS training programsWorks closely with the Associate Director for Crisis Services to ensure smooth integration of emergency services and routine clinical flowCollaborates with the Director and Associate Director of Psychiatry to ensure that clinical initiatives are consistent with other mission-driven activities, most especially training and outreachParticipates in discussions regarding personnel and agency planningStands-in for Director as needed in upper-level administrative meetings.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's degree in related field  

Experience: At least three years experience

Licensure: Licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Qualified candidates must also possess the following experience (experience gained as an intern acceptable):  

Minimum of three (3) years of experience which includes the following:   

Working in a college counseling center   

Providing clinical services to student populations 

Providing brief psychotherapy (maximum 12 sessions)  

Providing group therapy 

Providing crisis intervention to college students, including afterhours on-call 

Minimum of one (1) year of experience:  Providing clinical supervision to trainees or unlicensed staff  and experience developing and delivering outreach programming on a college campus.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited university program, and completed APA Accredited internship 

Experience working in an integrative care setting or participation in a multidisciplinary treatment team 

At least three years of post-licensure clinical experience 

Demonstrated experience in a leadership role 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard.  Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and the anticipated range is $95,000.00-120,000.00. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check and health and drug screen. This is an exempt-level position with UVa benefits.
