Associate Corporate Counsel, AWS Legal, Infrastructure
Description Amazon's Legal Department is looking for a talented energy and utilities lawyer in Madrid, Spain to fill the position of Associate Corporate Counsel to support Amazon Web Services (AWS), a dynamic and rapidly growing business within Amazon.com. AWS is at the forefront of the cloud computing and service industry, providing IT infrastructure services such as on-demand compute capacity, machine learning services, generative AI, storage, content delivery, database services, browsers, and more. This position will support AWS’s global energy and water teams in working with utilities, constructing new infrastructure, and piloting innovative, carbon-free energy projects in support of The Climate Pledge, which commits Amazon to achieve net zero carbon by 2040 – ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement. As Associate Corporate Counsel, you will partner with AWS’s business teams to support renewable energy procurement, global energy and water supply, infrastructure, and services agreements and provide guidance on working with private and governmental utilities as well as strategy, policy, and regulatory issues. You will have responsibility for structuring, drafting, and negotiating agreements, and counseling internal business partners on: • Energy and water supply agreements • Utility scale wind, solar, and battery storage power purchase agreements • Grid connection and energy infrastructure agreements • Utility interconnection agreements • Vendor agreements, including engineering, design, and construction agreements • Sustainable, carbon-free energy initiatives • Energy regulation and compliance • Energy and water strategy that aids AWS’s growth plans Key job responsibilities Principal duties include: • Structuring, drafting, and negotiating complex commercial agreements, including agreements related to utilities, energy, and water. • Providing high level judgment and ongoing operational advice related to business strategy in achieving AWS’s ambitious goals, including sustainability related projects. • Supporting and directly advising business partners on contracts, disputes, and strategic business initiatives. • Collaborating cross-functionally to resolve commercial, operational, compliance, security, and customer/vendor requests. A day in the life You will work directly with the various business teams to provide day-to-day advice and contract interpretation. You will also help develop, implement, and manage process improvements across the team, resolve legal issues that arise in existing commercial relationships, and handle pre-litigation legal disputes and inquiries. In this role, you will also interact with our Sustainability, Public Policy, Public Relations, Accounting, Finance, Economic Development and Tax teams as well as the broader AWS Infrastructure teams. Basic Qualifications - Experience in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating commercial contracts - Ability to travel as needed - 2-4 years of post-qualification legal experience (PQE) with a focus on energy - Licensed to practice law in Spain and/or other relevant EMEA jurisdiction - Transactional and/or utility experience related to electric or water infrastructure Preferred Qualifications - Experience of a mix of corporate law firm and in-house work - Speak, write, and read fluently in Spanish - Experience managing multiple projects, prioritizing, planning, and managing time - Experience with renewable energy projects, grid connection agreements and working with utilities - Common sense, enthusiastic, a good sense of humor and enjoy working hard, being challenged, and working in a fun, team-oriented environment - Demonstrates sound judgment even in ambiguous situations Amazon is an equal opportunities employer.
