Role/Team:
The Financial institutions and Country Risk Team, which is part of Northern Trust Group Risk Management, is responsible for providing independent oversight of all business activities at Northern Trust which create wholesale counterparty credit risk, client credit exposure arising from asset servicing, third party FX, and country risk. The team ensures that the management of counterparty and international risk advances Northern Trust’s business strategy within the corporation's risk appetite, aligns with market best practices, and meets or exceeds regulatory requirements and guidance.
Summary
Under general supervision (but works independently most of the time) oversee a portfolio of counterparties (hedge funds / banks) and countries. Performs financial, economic and market‐based analysis, prepares and presents reviews of assigned counterparties, countries and portfolios to credit committees and wider business partners with the goal of providing insightful credit opinions and recommendations. Responsible for ensuring that all entities are reviewed and monitored through the year using fundamental analysis techniques including traditional CAMELS analysis and market‐based information along with thorough ad‐hoc due diligence, visits and calls.
Analyst role responsible of a multi-billion dollar counterparty (hedge fund, banks and broker/dealers) and country portfolio. Responsibilities include:
• Manage a portfolio of bank counterparties and countries. Hedge Fund analysis will be an added advantage. Perform analysis of entities annually or on an ad‐hoc basis; assign Probability of Default ratings and appropriately sized credit facilities.
• Monitor trends and be able to serve as the subject matter expert and trusted advisor on assigned countries to partners.
• Manage relationships with local business units, inform of credit issues, and provide guidance for the development of strategies.
• Contribute to the development of risk monitoring products, processes and models related to counterparties and countries.
• Present to Senior Risk committees on a regular basis.
• Coordinate, participate or lead visits and calls with external counterparties or clients.
Major Duties
Manage relationships with US businesses - make decisions on business unit credit proposals and provide credit solutions.
2. Serve as subject expert and trusted advisor across the company.
3. Monitor counterparties for changes in risk and update management on key issues that impact credit quality.
4. Tracking NAV triggers and ensuring breaches are escalated and/or acted upon.
5. Present and participate in risk committees.
6. Manage relationships with counterparties, vendors and clients.
7. Perform analysis of higher-risk counterparties and countries annually or on ad-hoc basis.
8. Ensure portfolio is reviewed in a timely manner and quality of analyses is high.
9. Work with modelling teams to develop/enhance risk tools and models.
Knowledge/Skills
• Excellent communication, verbal, leadership and strategic skills
• Extensive knowledge of Bank and Broker dealer analysis
• Working knowledge of Country risk for emerging markets.
• Highly flexible and adaptable to change; ability to multi-task on several assignments at once
• Advanced analytical, writing skills and some quantitative skills
• Strong relationship and presentation skills
• Ability to develop relationships at all levels of the organization and crisis management/multi-tasking skills
Experience
• Master’s degree and/or CFA designation are required.
• 3 - 6 years of credit experience with banks, broker/dealers.
• Countries and Hedge funds will be an added advantage.
• Experience in counterparty and/or country analysis, in a buy‐side or counterparty risk function is preferred.
Please note that this role would be required to work until at least 10.30pm India time in order to liaise with the Chicago office and participate in team and committee meetings.
