Depop is looking for an Associate Backend Software Engineer to join us permanently.
Within this role, you’ll be working in the Connect team. This team focuses on how we connect our customers, with a focus on chat, in-app notifications, push notifications, emails and other forms of communication. We want to improve how we connect the community through communication on the platform.
This is a cross-functional squad where you will collaborate with backend and front end engineers, product, design and analytics to help achieve our goals.
Our team works with a modern Scala stack, including Play, Akka, http4s, Cats, Cats Effect, and Kafka. We deploy using Docker and Kubernetes.
Responsibilities
As a Backend Engineer within this team, you can expect to:
Work closely with Product Managers, Designers, Front-End and other Backend Engineers to understand problems and to contribute solutions toward.
You are able to use the relevant tooling in your domain to solve simple problems under supervision
You seize opportunities to improve your domain knowledge - engage in proactive learning, ask questions, self research, learn from others.
Embrace agile methodologies
Engage in a culture of continuous improvement by attending events such as blameless post-mortems, architecture reviews etc.
Collaborate on a daily basis with fellow engineers in the cross functional environment to solve problems and write code
You’ll own your code and workflows, through its entire lifecycle
Documenting any feature development
Qualifications
Capable writing basic code in Scala (or other backend languages e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python etc)
An interest in building backend services
An understanding of REST APIs
An understanding of distributed datastores and relational databases
Ability to proactively find and solve well defined problems with support from peers
Experience with learning new concepts and refining their skills independently
Nice to haves:
Experience with eCommerce
Experience with testing solutions at different levels —unit, integration, etc—
Experience with event-driven architectures
Experience using AWS
