Organization and Position Overview
Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.
The Sr. Principal – Safety is responsible for the development and implementation of industrial safety programs at the Lilly Medicine Foundry (LMF), including supporting the design of a best-in-class pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, developing technical capabilities at the Foundry related to industrial safety. They possess deep technical knowledge of industrial safety as it applies to pharmaceutical manufacturing and ensure compliance with internal and external requirements. They understand current best practices and aggressively pursue innovative solutions, leveraging emerging technologies. They maintain relationships with other internal experts in industrial safety and interact with regulators. The Sr Principal – Safety works cross-functionally to meet operational excellence goals, mentors technical staff in other functions, and helps create a culture of caring, transparency, and continuous improvement.
In the project delivery and startup phases (startup expected in 2027), this role will advise on the facility design as well as develop and implement the systems, programs, and business processes required to support GMP operations. This will require significant collaboration, creativity, and resilience as the site grows through startup to full scale GMP manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
Work with design teams, Lilly engineers, and other SME to design and deliver a best-in-class pharmaceutical manufacturing facility following the hierarchy of controls. Develops all LMF safety programs and lead cross-functional teams in implementing safety programs. Assist with the development of the HSE operational readiness plan for the LMF as a collaborative, inclusive, and energetic member of the HSE team.Provides technical industrial safety expertise for new product introductions, changes, nonroutine/troubleshooting activities, and shutdown/start up activities.Advises on priorities and the development of the LMF HSE plan. Hosts regulatory inspectors and internal auditors and leads/support self-assessments. Advises management and senior technical staff on industrial safety practices, and provides expert interpretation of regulations, corporate standards, policies, and industry guidance.Develops the skills and expertise of Operators, Engineering, Maintenance, Chemists, Leaders, and other staff to ensure effective and compliant implementation of safety programs. Promotes a speak up culture that empowers employees and contractors with the authority to stop work. Supports the investigation of events and promotes robust and sustainable corrective and preventative actions.Develops & delivers high quality training and communications.Drives implementation of site safety initiatives.Completes site performance metric reviews and analyses.Basic Requirements
Bachelor or master’s degree in Industrial Safety or related field. Minimum of 10 years in Industrial Safety, preferably in the pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical manufacturing, or related industry.Preferences

Initial location at Lilly Technology Center, Indianapolis. Permanent location at the new Lilly Medicines Foundry in Lebanon, Indiana. Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$63,000 - $162,800Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
