Reporting to the President, the Assistant Vice President of Legal Affairs will provide strategic direction and leadership in all legal matters. This senior leadership role will serve in the President’s cabinet and provide advice on issues relating to labor and employment, student affairs, ethics, litigation, compliance, corporate affiliates, a broad spectrum of contracts and school governance. • Serves as BMCC’s chief legal officer, supervising the provision of comprehensive legal services to the College. • Serves as the principal legal advisor to the President, Cabinet, and administrators across the College, providing legal advice on a wide range of legal, policy, academic, financial, and business matters. • Serves as a trusted analyst in the management of campus crises and critical incidents. • Participates actively in the development and implementation of BMCC’s strategic initiatives by providing advice regarding the legal considerations pertaining to such initiatives. • Provides legal advice on matters related to institutional governance, compliance, and risk management, including navigating complex regulatory environments. • Supports BMCC’s mission by promoting legal best practices in the learning environment. • Leads and manages the Office of Legal Affairs, overseeing an in-house team including the Executive Legal Counsel and Labor Designee, Legal Assistant/Associate, HEO Assistant, and Law Clerks, in matters involving day-to-day operations, higher education law, labor and employment law, procurement, contracts, FOIL, and other matters, while fostering an environment of excellence, collaboration, and professional growth. • Provides guidance and oversight on all legal work conducted by the Office of Legal Affairs, ensuring quality and efficiency in legal work product. • Promotes a diverse and inclusive culture within the legal department and across BMCC’s legal functions. • Leads and manages the Office of Compliance and Diversity, overseeing an in-house team including the Chief Diversity Officer, Deputy Director of Investigations and Title IX, CUNY Office Assistant, and Compliance Associate, ensuring that the College is compliant with applicable local, state, and federal laws and internal policies and procedures. • Oversees and ensures that all matters brought to the Office of Compliance and Diversity, including Title IX, Title VI, EEO, Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying, Sexual Harassment, and requests for Reasonable Accommodations, are addressed with cultural competency, emotional intelligence, timeliness, and care. • Promotes a diverse, inclusive, and equitable culture within BMCC. • Plays a key role in BMCC’s risk management strategies. • Collaborates with key stakeholders in the implementation of BMCC’s policies and processes. • Advises on complex legal issues related to the College’s governance, compliance, and ethical standards. • Provides legal advice to the College regarding all applicable federal, state, and local laws. **QUALIFICATIONS** This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. License to practice law in the State of New York is required at the time of the appointment. **Preferred qualifications:** + An earned Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited Law School. + A member in good standing of the New York State Bar. + Certification from an accredited college or university in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. + A minimum of 15 years of legal experience focusing on labor and employment law and/or higher education law in an in-house role or law firm representing public entities. + At least 8 years of legal experience in senior level management in higher education. **CUNY TITLE** Assistant Vice President **COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS** Salary range is $175,000 - $200,000 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
