Position Summary:
The Arkansas State University Department of Health Sciences & Risk Management invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Health Sciences & Risk Management (tenure-track) to begin in Fall 2026. The position is full-time (9-month) and tenure-track.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The primary teaching assignment and research focus will be in the Department’s Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management Program. The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for an active, high impact emergency management research program. Responsibilities include producing peer-reviewed publications, presenting at professional conferences, and applying for external funding. Additional responsibilities include preparing, developing, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses across multiple programs in the Department of Health Sciences and Risk Management. Applicants should have the ability to teach a broad range of courses across disciplines such as emergency management, health and/or public administration, policy, research methods, and program development and evaluation. Faculty are expected to maintain regular office hours, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in course/program assessment. Faculty are also expected to engage in departmental, college, university, and professional service activities that are in the best interest of the students, university, community, and the discipline at large.

The Department of Health Sciences & Risk Management has a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary focus across its programs in Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management, Dietetics/Nutritional Science, Public Health, Occupational & Environmental Safety & Health, and Health Studies.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Strong computer/technology skills required, or possess the ability to easily obtain needed skills. (Microsoft Office, Blackboard Learn and/or Canvas, variety of WEB based programs, etc.)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

Qualified applicants should submit their (1) curriculum vitae, (2) a statement of purpose indicating research interest and teaching philosophy, (3) writing sample (recent peer-reviewed article or dissertation chapter), and (4) contact information for three academic references, that can speak to your research and teaching, that will be contacted if chosen for an interview. Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. or professional doctorate in an emergency management or related discipline. Candidates who are ABD will also be considered, provided they obtain their PhD or professional doctorate by July 1, 2026.
In addition to the PhD or professional doctorate, candidates with a Master of Public Health (MPH) or a master’s degree in a related public health or occupational and environmental safety and health discipline are especially encouraged to apply. Emergency management disciplines include public health, environmental health, health and/or public administration, policy, risk/crisis communication, or another related scientific discipline.
Candidates should have a strong research agenda with evidence of peer-reviewed publications and/or external funding, or the potential to quickly develop a strong research agenda and be immediately successful regarding research and obtaining external funding. Candidates should also have experience with face-to-face and online teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
