Global Merchant and Network Services (GMNS) is the merchant network of American Express which acquires and maintains relationships with millions of merchants around the world that welcome American Express cards.
**About this Role**
We are recruiting for an Assistant Manager - Small Merchant Coverage Growth & Engagement to join the Small Merchant Partnership, Engagement and Business Operations team. This team plays a critical role in supporting the global coverage strategy by acquiring, onboarding, engaging, and retaining merchants on the American Express network while enabling business operations and managing risk.
Reporting to the Manager – Small Merchant Coverage Growth & Engagement, this role partners closely with External Sales Agent (ESA) and High Touch Marketing (HTM) channels (third party field sales, visits team, and outbound engagement call teams) to acquire, activate, grow, and retain American Express’s small merchant base in the Australian market. A key focus will be to expand merchant acceptance, optimize the welcome journey, drive activation, and strengthen perception of coverage through marketing initiatives and engagement channels.
**Key Responsibilities**
+ Drive initiatives that expand coverage, strengthen merchant engagement, and build a healthy, compliant network through ESA and HTM channels.
+ Oversee ESA and HTM operations to ensure compliance with the Sales Conduct Framework and business conduct standards.
+ Build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to identify channel growth opportunities, best practices, and areas to support business objectives.
+ Execute campaign deployment across small business channels, including Shop Small and AEDMO, to engage and activate merchants.
+ Manage operational excellence in calls, visits, and vendor performance across HTM
+ Provide insights into channel performance and identify opportunities to enhance activation, perception of coverage, and ROI.
+ Conduct training and support for ESA and HTM channels to build capability, drive activation, and ensure compliance with business conduct standards.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Strong ability to manage a diverse workload in a complex, fast-paced environment.
+ Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with proven experience influencing stakeholders.
+ Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
+ Self-motivated, proactive, and resilient — thrives in a dynamic environment.
+ Strong team player, with the ability to work across multiple teams and vendors.
+ Experience in vendor management, campaign deployment, or merchant engagement strategies is desirable.
