Assistant Grocery Manager

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with a focus on fast, friendly customer service. Assist customers by making product suggestions and engaging in suggestive selling through phone, intercom announcements and direct interaction. Answer and respond to incoming calls professionally; resolve customer complaints and escalate to the Store Director when needed. Serve as the acting Store Director in their absence (refer to Store Director job description). Assist in planning daily operations and monitoring production processes in alignment with company procedures and profitability goals. Build grocery displays, rotate product and discard outdated or spoiled items; maintain cleanliness of the department and work areas. Implement effective promotional and seasonal displays; support coordination of grocery sales promotions. Ensure merchandise is correctly priced, displayed and maintained; ensure shelves are clean and organized. Follow and maintain departmental standards and requirements. Monitor employee productivity and performance. May schedule employees to ensure adequate staffing and service levels. Possess knowledge of duties performed by all department employees, including Opening/Closing, Dairy and Frozen. Schedule, supervise, train and assign duties to department employees. Train employees on store policies, sales processes and record‑keeping procedures. Maintain working knowledge of company policies and guidelines as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Ensure proper code‑date compliance for all products within the department. Prepare sales and inventory reports; conduct physical inventory every 6 months. Control inventory to ensure adequate quantity, quality and freshness; stock and rotate product. Assist with ordering grocery products and maintaining inventory levels per division directives. Supervise reclamation processing and maintain orderly, in‑stock conditions in the backroom and grocery areas. Control shrink and manage departmental costs. Implement correct product preparation techniques; safely operate equipment including pallet jacks, hand trucks, scissors, knives, safety cutters and Sterilox machines. Perform receiving duties including breaking down loads, verifying invoices, inspecting quality, reporting shortages, stocking and rotating product. Follow product temperature guidelines, storage procedures and proper packaging techniques. Process administrative paperwork and maintain accurate department records. Complete and monitor required logs including daily log sheets, sales and labor documentation. Ensure product temperature compliance, retail labeling accuracy and adherence to federal/state regulations. Comply with all workplace safety rules and regulations. Maintain cleanliness, sanitation and safety in all work areas, coolers and display areas. Implement emergency procedures during equipment or software malfunctions. Operate computer systems and electronic ordering devices to order product. Participate in sales meetings when required and communicate department goals and opportunities to employees. Comply with and ensure adherence to company grooming standards and dress code. Perform all job duties safely, accurately, honestly and with integrity. Perform other necessary and assigned duties.

Skills and Physical Requirements

Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to maintain professionalism with customers and coworkers. Ability to lift, reach and maneuver items up to ~50 lbs; frequent bending, stooping and reaching required. Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks; repetitive arm movements required. Manual dexterity and strong hand‑eye coordination required. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Mental alertness required for safe, accurate work. Basic math skills and understanding of weights and measures. Knowledge of product variety, standards, perishability, handling, sanitation, labeling and department procedures. Ability to operate telephones, pallet jacks, hand trucks, knives, scissors, safety cutters and Sterilox machines; use cleaning supplies and equipment. Ability to operate computer software and electronic ordering devices. Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays; varying schedule; good attendance required. Exposure to potential hazards associated with equipment and work tools.

Work Environment

Work performed in a temperature‑controlled environment. Frequent exposure to refrigerated conditions (around 35°F). Possible exposure to freezer conditions (down to -20°F). Occasional travel may be required, including overnight travel.
