The Assistant Director of Student Activities & Student Organizations serves as an essential member of Student Life and has direct reporting responsibility to the Associate Director of Student Activities & Student Organizations. The mission of the Department of Student Activities and Student Organizations is to provide students with purposeful and inclusive programs, resources, and experiences that enhance the UM community through learning, engagement, and upholding campus traditions. The department serves as an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs and works closely with the Student Center Complex, William R. Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development, Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement, Multicultural Student Affairs, and the LGBTQ Student Center.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Athletic & Spirit Programming
+ Advise Category 5, the spirit programming board in planning events and promotions designed to increase support toward the university’s 16 athletic teams including football, basketball, baseball, and Olympic sports.
+ In partnership with Athletics, coordinate football activities for home games including, but not limited to pre-game festivities/Student Fan Zone, tunnel crew, student section activities, and promotions.
+ Coordinate and market special and annual events such as pep rallies, watch parties, freshmen walk, and away trips.
+ Collaborate with departments and student organizations to foster partnerships and athletic engagement.
+ Serve as the liaison to Athletics for the Department of Student Activities & Student Organizations.
Late Night & Weekend Programming
+ Serves as the advisor to the Canes Night Live (CNL) Committee, creating and advertising student-run late night and weekend programs and provide on-site supervision at CNL events.
+ Assist in the overall advisement of Hurricane Productions (HP), the University’s student-run programming board, with a specific focus on the Canes Night Live committee, through attending weekly executive board and committee meetings, assisting at events, and facilitate leadership development opportunities for HP leaders.
+ Works directly with registered student organizations to develop creative and collaborative late night and weekend programs, creating a consistent calendar of events. Works collaboratively with other departments, such as Housing and Residential Life, Wellness Center, Sandler Center for Alcohol and Other Drugs, Greek Life, and Commuter Student Involvement among others, providing direction and establishing programming partnerships for the late night and weekend student programs.
+ Serves as the primary administrator responsible for the development, coordination, and assessment of campus-wide late night and weekend programming initiatives.
+ Develop new and effective marketing strategies for late night and weekend programming to attract students to the programs, utilizing Engage, Instagram, and other mediums as appropriate. Serve as the liaison for obtaining web-related calendar information from programming partners.
Financial & Administrative Responsibility
+ Negotiates, reviews, and executes all necessary event contracts by working closely with Financial Operations, Risk Management, Purchasing, and the Office of General Counsel. Coordinates logistics, publicity, and interaction between University, University Facilities, Act/Agent, and appropriate vendors.
+ Assist in managing accounts, working closely with staff in Purchasing, Accounts Payable and Disbursements to ensure goods and services are acquired and paid through approved University processes. Monitor effectiveness of events through development and implementation of assessment instruments.
+ Financial management and oversight of various budgets including operational forecasts, accountability for monitoring, and ensuring compliance with policies.
+ Engages in fundraising activities and sponsor/donor cultivation to support departmental programs and services under the advisement of the Associate Director.
+ Coordinate on-campus gourmet food trucks for campus events including Orientation, Homecoming, Canes Carnival, and other events as requested.
+ Assist with department-wide programs, including Canefest, Homecoming, Commencement, Convocations, concerts, and special events.
Decision Making/Strategy
+ Contributes ideas and viewpoints to the Associate Director and Senior Director on operational and strategic plans for the department, as well as collaborative partnerships within the institution.
+ Represents the department on committees and workgroups as appointed by the department and other university officials.
+ Makes daily independent decisions to ensure department objectives are met and that University policies and procedures are followed.
+ Conducts on-going assessment of programs and services within the department.
+ Demonstrated project management, time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage details of multiple projects within firm schedules.
+ Ability to operate professionally and autonomously.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Director of Student Activities and Student Organizations.

Education & Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):
+ Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs or related field.
+ Two (2) years of progressive related experience in Higher Education/Student Affairs or related field.
+ Expectation to work some nights and weekends throughout the year.
