Assistant Dean for Academic Operations and Student Support - School of Data Science

The Assistant Dean is responsible for managing the day-to-day academic experience and the full student lifecycle within the School of Data Science. This role assists the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs by providing leadership, strategic direction, and organizational oversight for academic priorities, with a strong emphasis on student success and support. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Academic & Faculty Affairs.

The Assistant Dean assists in implementing academic programs, develops and enforces related policies and procedures, manages curriculum planning and development, and directs accreditation processes to ensure excellence and compliance in all academic offerings and operations.

In addition to academic oversight, this position provides strategic coordination and integration of student support services with all academic programs. Key student-facing units – including Career and Professional Development, Student Engagement, Admissions, and CAPS – will report to the Assistant Dean for routine oversight. This arrangement is intended to ensure close alignment between the units, including academic operations, to support a seamless and holistic student experience.

The portfolio also includes some academic administrative responsibilities, including support and encouragement for faculty engagement in academic programs and the student experience. Additional duties may involve oversight of budget and financial operations and coordination across academic support units to advance the School’s mission, and representation of the school in university-wide meetings and initiatives.
 

Duties and responsibilities:

Academic oversight: Manages the day-to-day operations of academic programs and curricular planning by collaborating with program directors and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.Student support: Oversees student services (Admissions, CAPS, Student Engagement, Career and Professional Development) to enhance student success and well-being.Administrative leadership: Provides operational oversight for functional areas such as registrar functions, academic program management, and student engagement. The Assistant Dean will assist the Associate Dean in setting and achieving strategic goals within the school.Data analysis and reporting: Oversees the collection and interpretation of data on student academic performance and retention to identify opportunities for improvement and prepares reports for stakeholders.Recruitment and retention: Collaborates on student recruitment and retention strategies.Representation: Representation of SDS in university-wide operational committees and academic initiativesThis position supervises professional staff in multiple student-facing and academic units.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Competitive candidates will have:

At least four years of managerial experience in an academic settingExperience supporting the full range of academic programs (undergraduate, graduate) and overseeing the day-to-day academic operations of a program or academic unit (including implementation and development)A strong record of working collaboratively with faculty to develop and implement academic programs and shape strategic prioritiesExperience coordinating academic operations with student support services such as Admissions, Career Services, Alumni Relations, and Student Engagement Demonstrated ability to align the academic mission with broader student support and engagement effortsExperience with strategic planning, accreditation processes, and academic policy development

Salary of from $130,000 to $140,000 per year commensurate with experience and education.

This position will require occasional weekend and evening work.

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: Eight years of increasingly responsible experience. Master's degree is typical and may substitute for some experience. Relevant exempt level experience may substitute for a degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
