Assistant Counsel, Patents
**Description** The Assistant Counsel, Patents will support ELC’s global innovation teams by helping to protect the company’s intellectual property assets and mitigate legal risks associated with new technologies and product launches. Leveraging a strong technical background in science or engineering, the Assistant Counsel will work closely with senior attorneys, R&D, and business stakeholders to build and manage the company’s patent portfolio, contribute to the negotiation of technology-related agreements, and promote awareness of intellectual property principles across the organization. Under the guidance of more senior attorneys, the Assistant Counsel, Patents will: + Patent Prosecution Support: Assist in drafting and prosecuting U.S. patent applications, with a focus on inventions in chemical formulations, processes, and packaging technologies. + Patent Risk Assessment: Support the evaluation of potential patent risks associated with new product launches, under attorney supervision. + Outside Counsel Management: Collaborate with external counsel on U.S. and foreign patent prosecution strategies. + Agreements: Assist in reviewing and drafting technology-related agreements (e.g., joint development, confidentiality, licensing). Training & Education: Participate in developing and delivering training programs on intellectual property principles to internal R&D and business stakeholders. **Qualifications** + Undergraduate or graduate degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry or similar; good practical working knowledge of chemistry + Understanding of mechanical technology sufficient to prepare and prosecute patent applications on simple packaging and components + Prior Technical/Industry Experience: 3–5 years of professional work in a scientific or engineering field in an industrial or large corporate setting is strongly preferred; Cosmetic and/or OTC industry experience particularly preferred + Excellent judgment and integrity + Excellent verbal and written communication skills + Ability to form strong relationships with business leaders, technologies, and Legal Department peers + Ability to execute in a complex matrixed environment + Demonstrable agility; track record for embracing change, adopting and applying technology to your work, and ability to contribute to process and workflow improvement efforts + Ability to act with a sense of urgency while remaining highly organized and proactively engaging stakeholders + Admission to at least one State Bar (or pending admission) + Must become registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) within 2 years of hire date Equal Opportunity Employer It is Company's policy not to discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, sex or gender (including pregnancy, childbirth and related medical conditions), gender identity or gender expression (including transgender status), sexual orientation, marital status, military service and veteran status, physical or mental disability, protected medical condition as defined by applicable state or local law, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws and ordinances.
