Assistant Controller

Description We are looking for an experienced Assistant Controller to join our team in Southfield, Michigan. This role demands a highly organized and detail-oriented individual who excels in managing payroll, accounts receivable, project finances, and accounts payable processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting and be capable of collaborating across departments to ensure accurate financial management.
Responsibilities:
• Oversee weekly payroll processing, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
• Address jurisdictional and pay scale inquiries related to local union requirements.
• Coordinate with the corporate office to resolve benefit-related questions and issues.
• Prepare certified payroll reports and handle prevailing wage requests or surveys.
• Develop and distribute bi-weekly billing schedules to project managers.
• Review monthly billing documents with project managers and ensure accurate invoicing.
• Collaborate with the President and project teams to set up new projects and budgets in the accounting system.
• Monitor accounts receivable and retention reports, addressing collection issues proactively.
• Review subcontractor payments, manual check requests, and corporate expenses for approval.
• Conduct quarterly financial reviews with the President and assist with year-end audit confirmations. Requirements • Extensive experience in payroll processing and accounts receivable management.
• Prior construction industry experience is required.
• 7-10 years of experience in an accounting-related field.
• Proficiency in using Spectrum or similar accounting software.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
• Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Familiarity with financial reporting, general ledger, and month-end close processes.
