Yes County Albany Street Address 10 Corporate Woods Drive City Albany State NY Zip Code 12211 Duties Description Position SummaryUnder direction of the General Counsel, the Assistant Attorney provides quality legal service to departments within the System on matters requiring legal attention which arise in the course of the System's business and operations, including advice interpreting and implementing the laws governing the System and other laws applicable to the System. It is anticipated that the position will be primarily focused on the System's transactional matters. In addition to transactional matters, the successful candidate may have the opportunity to work on and learn various other aspects of the System’s legal work in a collaborative and team-oriented environment, potentially including, but not limited to, benefits matters, Powers of Attorney, trusts, domestic relations orders, labor and employment matters, litigation matters, legislative matters.The duties of the Assistant Attorney include, but are not limited to, the following:Negotiate procurement and investment contracts, prepare opinions, determination letters and memorandum of lawApplicant will be expected to develop and serve as a subject matter expert on benefits, investments, operations, regulatory and compliance related mattersRespond to records requests and subpoenasReview trust documents for beneficiary designations and banking transactions, Guardianships, Powers of Attorney, domestic relations orders, and other court documentsInterpret statutes and rules and regulationsRespond to System litigationProvide advice and counsel on benefits, investments, operations and compliance matters which may arise in course of System's operationAdminister PowerPoint presentations on different topics to NYSTRS staffAssist the General Counsel and other Office of the General Counsel staff as needed Minimum Qualifications Must be a graduate of an accredited U.S. law school with a JD degree, or foreign equivalent; ANDAdmission to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for admission within six months)Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of and/or interest in pension plansInterest in investments legal work, including public equities, fixed income, real estate, private equity, private debt, derivatives, and securities litigation.Experience reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, such as non-disclosure agreements, vendor agreements, licensing agreements, investment management agreements, commingled fund documents, etc.Experience reading/interpreting legal documents, including, but not limited to, trusts, powers of attorney and domestic relation orders, discovery demands.Experience interpreting and drafting statutes and regulationsLitigation experience, specifically with Article 78 proceedingsExperience or interest in labor and employment lawTax law experienceCommitment to providing exceptional customer serviceExcellent communication skillsExcellent interpersonal skillsAbility to effectively work within a deadline driven environmentAbility to maintain good working relationships with co-workersAbility to multi-task and manage changing prioritiesHighly accurate, organized, and logical work habitsDemonstrates a strong sense of accountability Additional Comments Please note: You must submit an application directly to the posting on our applicant portal.
