Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Senior Archaeologist/Principal Investigator (Archaeologist IV) for full-time permanent employment in one of our New York City offices.

An Archaeologist IV is a core member of the Cultural Resources Program in the New York City metro area, with responsibility for successfully winning and executing projects, and leading all aspects of project implementation, while serving as Principal Investigator. Additional responsibilities include interfacing with regulatory agencies, private and public sector clients, and AECOM Project Managers, planners, and subject matter experts. The Senior Archaeologist/Principal Investigator will have extensive knowledge of field excavation techniques, implement archaeological inventory, evaluation, and data recovery efforts, analyze prehistoric and historic artifacts, and prepare compliance reports.  They will also oversee staff in field, laboratory, and office contexts. This is a regular, full-time, salaried position.  AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Serve as a Principal Investigator and have experience preparing Work Plans, designing research and field methodologies, directing field crews including scheduling work, making individual or teamwork assignments, and leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods, performing and overseeing data interpretation, overseeing report production, and making determinations of eligibility and client recommendations.Scope archaeological projects and prepare technical and cost proposals. Mentor junior staff in all aspects of archaeological investigations.Provide regulatory compliance support for Federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients. Support all phases of archaeological investigation, including archaeological monitoring.Collect information and make judgments through observation, interviews, and the review of documents.Write and review archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms and make decisions about project alternatives, NRHP evaluations, and effects on historic properties.Support the preparation of environmental and NEPA reports.Provide specialist technical advice on cultural resource management to clients, as well as AECOM Project Managers, planners, and subject matter experts.Liaise and develop positive relationships with clients and other stakeholders.Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects and deliverables meet AECOM quality standards.Firm understanding and knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory framework, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act, and New York City, New York State, and surrounding jurisdictions cultural resources rules and regulations. 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

BA/BS + 6 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and / or education.Registered Professional ArchaeologistExperience with implementing Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.Must be willing to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout the New York City region. Valid US DLDue to the nature of work, US Citizenship is required

 Preferred Additional Qualifications

 MA, MS, or PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field with 10 years of relevant experience.Ten (10) years of experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.Five (5) years of experience in a supervisory capacity in the field or in the office.Relevant field experience in highly urbanized areas, specifically New York City.Membership in the Professional Archaeologists of New York City (PANYC)Advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic or faunal analysis; historical archaeology).Experience managing cultural resources management projects, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.Experience with tribal consultation.Experience supervising large crews and/or multiple crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.Proficiency in the use of GPS data collection as well as ESRI GIS software.Artifact identification skills and experience for the identification of both Prehistoric and Historic material.Experience with preparation of Memoranda of Agreement and/or Programmatic AgreementsHas worked on an interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts and planners.Works well in a team environment.
