Job DescriptionReporting directly to the Department Head, the Analyst II is responsible for providing technical support and analysis within the Cannabis Chemistry Testing Laboratory, with a specific focus on Heavy Metal analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and ICPMS. The role involves working in a deadline-based, high-pressure environment with ongoing projects for various clients.
Responsibilities:
Sample Preparation:
Prepare liquid and solid samples for trace metal analysis.Perform acid digestion (e.g., microwave or hot block digestion) using nitric, hydrochloric, or hydrofluoric acid.Accurately weigh and dilute samples to appropriate concentrations.Filter, centrifuge, or otherwise clarify samples as required by method.Ensure contamination control (use of clean labware, cleanroom protocols, etc.).Prepare samples for HPLC analysis (e.g., filtration, dilution, pH adjustment).Extract active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, or impurities.Perform derivatization when required by the method.Instrument Operation:
Set up and calibrate ICP and/or ICP-MS instruments (e.g., torch alignment, nebulizer setup, cone cleaning).Run daily performance checks (e.g., tuning and calibration checks).Analyze samples according to validated methods and regulatory requirements.Run and verify calibration curves, QC standards, blanks, and spikes.Data Analysis & Reporting:
Process and review spectral data using appropriate software.Quantify elemental concentrations using external calibration or internal standard methods.Check for interferences (isobaric, matrix, spectral) and apply corrections.Prepare detailed and accurate analytical reports and Certificates of Analysis (CoA).Ensure traceability and proper documentation in accordance with GLP/GMP.Method Development & Validation:
Develop new ICP/ICP-MS methods or optimize existing ones.Perform validation studies (accuracy, precision, LOD, LOQ, linearity, robustness).Write and review SOPs, validation protocols, and technical documentation.Maintenance & Troubleshooting:Perform routine maintenance (torch cleaning, cone polishing, tubing replacement).Troubleshoot common issues (e.g., plasma instability, clogging, memory effects).Work with service engineers for major repairs or upgrades.Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
