Summary The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic will function under the Facilities Management Service. Responsibilities The duties of the position may include but, are not limited to: The incumbent is responsible for performing routine preventative maintenance and repairs on HVAC and refrigeration systems throughout the VAMC and other duties as assigned. Under the supervision of the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent receives specific assignments or oral instructions from the Supervisor or Work Leader who has the responsibility for each job through completion. May require assistance from the Supervisor or Journeymen AC Mechanics when performing more complex aspects of the position. The incumbent will perform troubleshooting using the proper equipment for testing. Maintains, installs and repairs a wide variety of types and sizes of refrigerators, domestic refrigerators, freezers, condensers, water coolers, air filtering, air conditioning equipment, ventilation equipment, some refrigerated medical equipment and evaporative coolers. Diagnoses problems and takes corrective action necessary such as repair and replace compressor parts, condensers, and controls such as thermostats, pressure stats, relays, switches and pneumatic controls. Makes necessary inspections and repairs of evaporators, receivers, seals, expansion or pressure valves, capillary tubes, pressure and thermostatic controls. Installs and fits connecting rods, crank shafts, pistons, rings, bushings, pulleys, belts, fans and fly wheels. Installs or relocates refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, tests for leaks; fabricates small parts or reconditions or modifies parts. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent does most of his/her work inside but is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment. Is occasionally subject to burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure to repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs. Face masks and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
