The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

Preoperative Management of the Cardiac Surgery PatientsPerforms history and physical examination in preparation for Cardiac surgery. Documents findings in the patient's record. Ensures all patient phone calls are returned within 24 hours.Orders preoperative medication and appropriate laboratory, radiologic and special diagnostic tests required for a complete preoperative evaluation. Interpret and report findings to attending physician and resident staff.Orders appropriate medications per the pre-operative protocolCommunicates with office staff regarding the appropriate scheduling needs and arrangements for surgery.Obtains appropriate preoperative consents for surgery and procedures. Ensures completion of all needed preoperative tests, forms, and documents.Communicates with other members of the health care team (i.e., referring physicians, nurses, etc.) to establish and maintain appropriate plan of care, request appropriate consultations.Initiates or reinforces patient teaching with the patients and family members.Obtains catheterization films/CAT scans/X-rays for next day's OR.Enters all documentation in to EMR.Performs and documents STS risk calculationsMay participate in departmental research activities.Postoperative Management of the Cardiac Surgery PatientOrders any appropriate medications and diagnostic tests as directed by cardiac surgeon.Participates in patient care rounds with attending to determine the overall and daily plan of care.Enters appropriate orders based on patient's condition and progress. Reports acute changes in patient status to cardiac attending/residents.Interprets hemodynamic monitoring flow sheet data, laboratory and radiological tests.Calls in consultations and discusses with consultants' plan of patient care. Discusses with patients and family progress of care.Liaison between rehab facilities and/or referring physicians and surgeons. Writes prescriptions.Collects relevant data and prepare patient's discharge packet including needed prescriptions.Coordinates appropriate referrals to specialties for patient care consultation with surgeon.Dictates discharge summaries, comprehensive discharge and/or interim update letters to referring physicians.Initiates discharge planning promptly.Collaborates with social work/discharge planners to arrange appropriate and safe discharge.Initiates discharge orders in a timely manner in accordance with discharge initiative. Assists in bed management including arrangement of patient admission and transfers. May participate in departmental research activities.Provides follow-up care for any wound complicationOutpatient ClinicFull assessment and development of plan of care of postoperative cardiac surgery patients.Initiation, titration and discontinuation of medications.Orders and interprets laboratory and radiographic testing.Assessment and management of surgical wounds.Communicates all findings to attending surgeon in a timely manner. Performs other duties may be assigned.CORPORATE COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIESKeeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers' regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified. Keeps abreast of hospital and departmental policies and procedures.Understands and adheres to Rutgers RWJMS compliance standards as they appear in Rutgers RWJMS Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy and keep abreast of all federal, state and Rutgers RWJMS regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of a Masters' Degree required. Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the Board of Nursing with prescriptive authority in the State of New Jersey.CPR required. At least two (2) years of nursing experience required preferably as an Advanced Practice Nurse. Experience as a surgical or cardiac surgery APN/PA within a critical care setting is preferred. Experience in hepatology/gastroenterology preferred. EMR & SCM experience preferred. At least one (1) year of experience with electronic medical records preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office preferred. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required. Experience in treating diverse patient population preferred.Credential Required: Current license to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse and certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of New Jersey. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to walk to different areas of the school and hospital. Must be able to carry binders. Requires standing on feet for long periods of time while examining patients and performing duties. Excellent verbal and auditory skills for communicating effectively and clearly with patients, families, nursing, staff, physicians and other hospital departments. Near visual acuity required for reading long reports.
