Advanced Cell Engineer

Job Description

On-site: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC) in Warren, Michigan on a full-time basis (5 days/week).

The Role:
At General Motors, we’re driving the future of mobility through cutting-edge battery innovation.  As an Advanced Cell Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in developing and refining cell technologies that power our next-generation electric vehicles.  This is a hands-on, on-site position at WBCIC, where you’ll collaborate with top-tier engineers and researchers to push the boundaries of energy storage.

We’re looking for a candidate who is passionate about advancing technologies in automotive battery cells and eager to continuously learn and grow.  You will be responsible for leveraging your technical experience to complement a talented team of advanced cell engineers, to develop and implement solutions for cell designs, and builds that meet project timelines.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

Lead daily build activities of electrode production at WBCICSupport the design, development, and validation of advanced battery cells for automotive applicationsApply your understanding of cell architecture, electrochemistry, and manufacturing processes to improve performance and reliabilityAnalyze and interpret data from cell builds and testing to identify root causes and drive improvements at the component and electrode levelPresent technical findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and leadershipUtilize structured problem-solving methodologies (DMAIC, 8D, PDCA, etc) to resolve issues and optimize processesIdentify innovations in operational equipment and emerging technologies, providing engineering support and recommendations to adjacent teams to promote safe operations, improved quality, and cutting-edge processes.Stay informed on upcoming advanced technologies within the electrification community to ensure alignment with capabilities, maintaining safety, quality, and on-time execution.Formulate strategic project plans to ensure the efficient execution of advanced cell engineering goals.Collaborate with cross-functional team members, such as cell design, product execution, research, and manufacturing engineering, to support timely completion of cell builds at the WBCIC.Work with the Component and Integration Engineers to scale up build parameters for large-scale electrode builds based on test results at smaller scalesEstablish quality standards and workflows for electrode builds and collaborate with technicians to drive process adjustments to meet quality and yield goals.Develop and apply quality control systems to drive continuous improvement in safety metrics.Use statistical tools to quantify relationship between build conditions and electrode parameters, and address any gaps in electrode-level performanceTrack ongoing projects and provide relevant and succinct technical status updates to stakeholders at a regular cadence, identifying and escalating critical risks to maintain progress and mitigate potential roadblocks.Work with engineering and manufacturing teams to convert cell-level requirements into component-level specifications.Stay abreast with technology trends and roadmaps in electrode manufacturing for automotive grade cells

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other related Science Degree Hands-on electrode manufacturing experience (mixing, coating, calendaring, slitting) or similar relevant engineering experience2 years of engineering experienceWorking knowledge of cell technology, including cell design and manufacturing processesStrong analytical skills for data analysis, project management, and problem-solvingHigh level of interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team environmentPersuasive communication and presentation skillsHigh level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

Master’s Degree, PhD, or other advanced certificationsPrior technical knowledge with automotive electrical components, preferably prismatic cellsHands-on experience building electrodes for large format cellsFamiliarity with vision systems for defect detection and quality controlKnowledge of quality tools and statistical process controlA passion for innovation and a collaborative mindset in a fast-paced environment



This role is categorized as onsite. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location on a full-time basis.
