Program Overview
The AHS Administrative Fellowship Program is a 1-year (Summer 2026 to Summer 2027), full-time, salaried position that provides recent graduates the opportunity to gain practical healthcare administration experience in a multi-hospital health system in New Jersey.
The Administrative Fellow(s) will engage in high-visibility projects at the system level that involve operations planning, integration, ambulatory care networks, telemedicine, analytics, business development, and performance improvement. During their time at AHS, the fellow(s) will gain insight into areas of health system administration by frequently interacting with senior executives, department managers, and front-line staff.
The Executive Vice President and Chief Health Systems Officer, Scott Leighty, serves as the program's executive sponsor. Carol Vargas, Vice President of Integrated Care, and Colleen McManus, Executive Director of Operations, serve as the program preceptors providing the fellow(s) with support and guidance for learning opportunities, professional development, and project work throughout the fellowship. The fellow(s) will interact frequently with various system leaders, providing additional opportunity for mentorship. Former AHS Administrative Fellows offer ongoing and informal support to the current fellow(s) as well.
Project Work
The AHS Administrative Fellowship is designed to involve the fellow(s) in meaningful project-based work that supports both the ongoing needs and goals of the health system, as well as the interests and development of the fellow(s). Along with project work, the fellow(s) are encouraged to further their learning and professional development by attending additional meetings, interacting with system leaders, shadowing, and partaking in many other activities across the heath system. Over the course of their 1-year tenure, the fellow(s) will gain increasing levels of responsibility resulting in the opportunity to have a lasting, sustaining impact on the health system all while learning about the AHS organization.

+ Project Management – Exposure to projects with varying expected levels of responsibility
+ Operations – Operation management for one of New Jersey's Mega-Vaccine Centers
+ Data & Analytics – Financial performance and value-based contracting
+ Strategic Planning – Health system network and Healthcare Transformation Consortium development
+ Financial Analysis – P&L analysis, business planning, and budget analysis
+ Innovation & Digital Health – Telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, EHR project management
+ Workforce Management – Staffing efficiency and performance improvement

Fellowship Qualifications
+ Applicants must have a master’s degree from a CAHME accredited program in a relevant healthcare field (MHSA/MHA/MPH/MPA/MBA) for the fellowship position or be enrolled in their last year of the graduate program on schedule to complete the degree before the fellowship commences. This program also includes candidates who have completed the coursework, and their graduate program requires a third-year fellowship.
+ Relevant healthcare work experience strongly preferred.
+ Evidence of strong analytical and communication skills is required.
+ Demonstrated ability to work both independently and constructively as a team.
